geography

Geographical location

Frankenroda is located in the conservation area of the Werra Valley . The Mönchsberg, a northern side summit of the majority to towers over the city falcons belonging widths mountain with a small observation tower. The Probsteizella north of the village belongs to Frankenroda .

history

Frankenroda was first mentioned in a document on July 10, 1229. Ludwig der Eiserne is mentioned when he increased his property in St. Peter's Abbey in Erfurt by adding some land on the Werra between Falken and Frankenroda. At that time the residents were parish in Probsteizella , as the place did not yet have its own church. Around 1715 the population of Frankenroda was about 240 people.

Haineck Castle near Nazza was built by Landgrave Balthasar in 1392 , and the neighboring places under his rule: Hallungen, Nazza, Lauterbach, Neukirchen, Frankenroda and Ebenshausen were combined to form the Haineck Castle District , they later formed the Haineck Office . After 1500 the lords of Hopffgarten received the castle and the Haineck office as a pledge and from 1513 it was transferred as a hereditary fiefdom by the sovereign, Duke Friedrich the Wise . In the following subdivisions of the Wettin areas, the Haineck office and thus also Frankenroda were always counted as part of the Ernestine part because they belonged to the Hopffgarten court . The Hopffgarten communities formed an exclave of the Gotha Duchy until 1920 .

On the evening of November 22, 1944, Frankenroda was the target of an air raid during the Second World War . Around 10:30 p.m., an aerial bomb detonated next to the school building, which was completely destroyed.

In 1976 the footbridge over the Werra, which for years connected the town with the parts of the district west of the Werra and the neighboring town of Scherbda and was regularly dismantled during floods and over winter, was replaced by a massive bridge structure. The last construction of the footbridge took place in the spring of 1977, then the timber was offered for sale. At that time, today's concrete bridge already existed as a secure connection to the other bank. The bridge, a reinforced concrete structure, was designed so massive that it also allows tanks to cross the river - a measure for the purposes of national defense of the GDR. In the summer of 2019, a thorough renovation of the bridge began with the renewal of the superstructure. It was completed in December 2019; 700,000 euros were invested.

Economy and Infrastructure

Rail transport

From 1902 to 1945 Frankenroda had a train station on the Schwebda – Wartha railway line , which connected the place with Eisenach , Mihla , Creuzburg , Treffurt , Wanfried and Eschwege . On April 3, 1945, the Werra bridges of the railway line at Mihla, Ebenshausen , Frankenroda and Falken were blown up as part of the fighting during the Second World War . The rail traffic between Mihla and Treffurt was not resumed.

Roads and bike paths

For road traffic, Frankenroda can be reached via a district road branching off from Landstrasse 1016 (Eisenach-Mihla-Mühlhausen). The Werratal cycle path runs through the village . Frankenroda is served by various bus routes operated by the Wartburgmobil transport company.

power supply

In the 1920s, Werrakraftwerke Aktiengesellschaft , of which the state of Thuringia was the main shareholder , intended to build a hydropower plant near Frankenroda. It was planned to build a roller weir near Buchenau , similar to the one at the Spichra hydropower plant , and to channel water from this through an approximately 1.8 km long pressure tunnel to Frankenroda. The project would have resulted in a height of fall of 11 meters and would have enabled a generator output of around 5000 HP / 3680 kW. The planning was not implemented, probably for cost reasons.
