history

The place is mentioned for the first time in 1153. In old documents and documents from that time it is also called Wyler or Wylere . Weilar Castle stood on the site of Weilar Castle . In 1153 a ministerial family Weilar was first mentioned. The ownership structure changed constantly, so that Weilar once belonged to the Hersfeld monastery and later to the Fulda monastery . In 1498, the family name of the Boineburgs was first mentioned in connection with the place. Ludwig I. von Boyneburg received fiefs from Count Wilhelm von Henneberg to Weilar. In the following period it belonged to the Boineburg rule of Lengsfeld .

Weilar was persecuted by witches from 1663 to 1713. Nine people got into witch trials , three women and one man were burned.

In the 18th century the castle was transformed into a palace. Remains of the castle are in the masonry and in the farm buildings.

coat of arms

The coat of arms was designed by the heraldist Uwe Reipert . The coat of arms of the community of Weilar is split twice: in the front a square of silver and black, in the middle in green a stylized, right-turning, silver lily of the valley with 4 flowers, in the back a black St. Andrew's cross in silver. The silver / black square is taken from the family coat of arms of the Boineburgs, whose family history was linked to the village and its surroundings for almost half a millennium. The lily of the valley symbolizes the location of the village in the Thuringian Vorderrhön with its species-rich flora. The St. Andrew's cross found its way into the coat of arms as a symbol for the evangelical church built in the village, which bears the name of the apostle Andrew .
