Weilar Castle is located in the municipality of Weilar in the Vorderrhön in the Wartburg district in Thuringia .

history

One of the most important properties in the village, the castle with its park , was first mentioned in 1153. It was the Lords of Wilere who built the house. The moated castle is filled with ditches from the water of the Felda .

In 1520 the Boineburgs got the castle from the abbot from Hersfeld . Until then, the complex was a moated castle . The present castle was built in the 18th century on the foundation walls of the moated castle. Remains of the castle walls are still there.

In 1945 the gentlemen had to leave the castle.

Refugees and resettlers found shelter until the house was used as a children's home of the People's Solidarity . War invalids later found shelter. From 1959 the castle served as a home after work.

Extensive maintenance measures were required in the attic in 1979, which however greatly changed the appearance of the castle. In 1999 the old people's home was closed .

On December 16, 2005, the new senior citizens' home next to the castle was inaugurated. Renovation and maintenance work is now being carried out in the castle in order to approximate the earlier view.
