The community is located in the southeastern part of the Wartburg district. The municipality is bounded in the north by the area of ​​the municipality of Moorgrund and in the east by the city of Bad Liebenstein . In the south, the border with Breitungen / Werra is also the boundary between the Wartburg district and the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district . The district town of Bad Salzungen borders in the west .

Community structure

The towns of Barchfeld and Immelborn on the Werra have long historical, cultural, economic and infrastructural connections. Since 1994 they have been working together in the Barchfeld administrative community. The mayors of Barchfeld and Immelborn signed the integration agreement on November 2, 2011, following the consensus of the municipal councils of both municipalities involved. After the approval of the responsible local supervisory authority of the district office of the Wartburg district and the interior committee of the Thuringian state parliament , the state parliament approved the integration on November 22, 2012. On December 31, 2012, the municipality of Immelborn was incorporated into the municipality of Barchfeld and the extended municipality was renamed Barchfeld-Immelborn. At the same time, the Barchfeld administrative community was dissolved.

The existing gravel deposits in the Werraaue were explored at the beginning of the 20th century in the search for potash deposits.Since 1964, large-scale quarry ponds have been created between Barchfeld and Immelborn with the Immelborn gravel pit , which since the 1980s have also been developed for tourism as a bathing lake , for water sports and with a campsite . Gravel mining continues to this day in mining field III north of Immelborn, there is a gravel works on the outskirts of Immelborn.

The municipality has three designated industrial parks, on which primarily metal processing, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering companies have settled:
