In 1964, the gravel deposits in the Werra floodplain east of Immelborn began to be extracted. Using floating dredgers , gravel pits were created with a depth of sometimes over 20 m, which quickly filled with the high groundwater . In 1990 the gravel works was privatized. The removal of the material obtained via trucks and one in the station Immelborn of the Werra Railway branching off loading track, a remnant of the former railway line Immelborn-Steinbach .

Bathing lake

At the beginning of the 1970s, an initially illegal bathing operation began at the resulting Kiesseen, which was legalized and organized on Kiessee I, south of the federal road, at the beginning of the 1980s by the responsible authorities of the Bad Salzungen district . Among other things, the first nudist bathing area in what is now Thuringia was designated on the lake .

The bathing lake at the Immelborn gravel pit has been privately operated since 1990. In 1998, the Kiessee II north of the main road was also released as bathing water.

The Kiessee I and II Immelborn is currently (2013) the only body of water in the Wartburg district, besides the Schönsee near Urnshausen , that is accessible as bathing water in the sense of the Bathing Water Directive .

In the medium term, bathing at Kiessee I is to be discontinued due to the increasing siltation and the expected deterioration in water quality, so that only the opposite Kiessee II can then be used.
