The Schönsee is a sinkhole lake near Urnshausen (municipality of Dermbach ) in the Wartburg district in Thuringia .

location

The Schönsee is located in the southeast of the Wartburg district on the western slope of the Pleß about two kilometers northeast of Urnshausen and ten kilometers southwest of the district town of Bad Salzungen .

history

The lake created by a sinkhole has a size of approx. 3.4 hectares, the deepest part of the lake is approx. 25 meters. It is fed by an enclosed spring and by surface water. Downstream of the Schönsee are three fish ponds that were created in the early 20th century.

In the 1950s and 1960s, the Schönsee was a popular swimming lake and campsite. In 1974 he was included in the restricted military area of the NVA troops stationed in what is now the Werra Valley barracks , who built a cottage settlement there. In 1991 the lake and the surrounding area came back into communal ownership of the municipality of Urnshausen and was redeveloped for tourism. A tent and camping site was created; In terms of fishing, the lake and the neighboring ponds are used by the Urnshausen fishing association .

In 2010 a new sanitary building was built and the access road was paved with asphalt.

In addition to the Kiesseen I and II of the Immelborn gravel pit , the Schönsee is currently (2013) the only body of water in the Wartburg district that is designated as bathing water in the sense of the Bathing Water Directive .
