The Werratal barracks is a Bundeswehr barracks in the spa town of Bad Salzungen in the state of Thuringia .
history
The barracks were built in 1972. After four years of construction, from 1975 the 23rd Motorized Rifle Regiment, the 4th Reconnaissance Battalion, the 4 Engineer Battalion and the 4 Armored Rifle Division of the 4th Motorized Rifle Division of the National People's Army were stationed there, with a total of 3,250 personnel Soldiers decreed. From 1965 to 1990 the barracks had the traditional name " Anton Saefkow ".
After the Federal Minister of Defense took over command and control of the National People's Army on October 3, 1990, the formation of associations and independent units of the 39 Thuringia Tank Brigade began here . With around 2,000 soldiers and 200 civil servants, the barracks was the main station of the brigade in Thuringia in the 1990s.
On December 14, 1992 the name of the Werratal barracks was ceremoniously given . After the decommissioning of Panzerbrigade 39 Thuringia on September 30, 2001, the location of Jägerbrigade 37 (since 2007 Panzergrenadierbrigade 37 ) was placed under the Free State of Saxony .
location
The Werratal barracks is located on the outskirts of Bad Salzungen and extends south along the B 62 to Immelborn. The site also has a site training area with shooting lanes (hand weapons) and training rooms for engineers and infantry . This extends from the end of the barracks over the village of Übelroda in a southward direction to the 645 m high Pleß on which the former training barracks ( Pleßkaserne ) stands for NCOs.
traffic
The barracks can be reached by train, bus or car. The main station is Bad Salzungen, from which there is a regular train connection through the Süd-Thüringen Bahn to Eisenach main station . The walk from the train station to the barracks is around 30 minutes. The barracks can be reached by car via the A 4 exit Friedewald - B 62 - Vacha - Merkers or via the Eisenach Ost exit - B 19 - Etterwind - Barchfeld - B 62 - Immelborn. The VUW bus line A "Stadtverkehr Bad Salzungen" runs every 30 minutes to and from the train station.
Location
As structural facilities, the site has a swimming pool, a sports hall, sports field, simulators for hand weapons ( AGSHP ), a shooting simulator for the armored troops (ASPT), a combat simulator for the armored infantry platoon (AGPG), a gas station, armored car and armored car wash and parking areas and repair shops.

The Bad Salzungen site regularly provides personnel for the Bundeswehr's missions abroad. So were the parts of the battalions at SFOR, EUFOR, KFOR and ISAF.
