history

1897-1945

On August 1, 1897, the Eisenach tram opened its operations, which at the time of its greatest expansion was run on three lines.

Railcar 5 with an open sidecar around 1900

On the private initiative of a master locksmith, bus and coach operations on the bus routes Bahnhof – Wartburg and Bahnhof – Hohe Sonne – Wilhelmsthaler See were opened at Easter 1913 and immediately enjoyed great interest. The buses acquired in Berlin were given improved brakes and new paintwork. In 1918, the Deutsche Reichspost took over the lucrative bus business in Eisenach and established connections to all of the localities in the district.

The first power post lines in what is now the district area were set up in 1914 to supplement the stagecoach courses that were still in service. Immediately before the war in the summer of 1939, the following Kraftpost lines ran:

Bad Liebenstein - Ruhla - Eisenach Bad Liebenstein Erfurt
Bad Liebenstein - Hohe Sonne - Eisenach Bad Liebenstein Erfurt
Schweina - Friedrichroda only from late May to mid-September Bad Liebenstein Erfurt

On July 1, 1939, the city bus route from the main train station to Herrenmühlenstrasse went into operation. However, this was already discontinued on November 30, 1939.

1946-1989

Between 1949 and 1970, line bus connections between the individual post offices were operated, partly parallel to the road transport lines , by the Deutsche Post under Allied administration and then by the Deutsche Post of the GDR as before the war . For example, the connections Vacha - Geisa and Geisa - Wernshausen (before the war already from Hünfeld ) were to be taken over by VEB Kraftverkehr Bad Salzungen Kraftpost lines. The actual power mail traffic ended on June 30, 1953, but afterwards so-called land power posts in minibuses (e.g. the Granit 30K phenomenon ) sometimes combined people and mail to the smaller towns.

On January 1, 1950, the tram operation was separated from the electricity company and initially continued as a municipal commercial enterprise (KWU). The KWUs were dissolved as early as March 31, 1951 and the tram became independent as VEB (K) Städtischer Verkehr Eisenach.

Due to the border situation between the Soviet (Thuringia) and American (Hesse) occupation zone , the scheduled transport of the Kalikumpel had to be switched on October 4, 1952 from the Ulstertalbahn and the Wenigentaft-Mansbach-Oechsen railway to makeshift buses of the Auto-Transportgemeinschaft Thuringia (ATG) (so-called Change of mode of transport ). A few days later, on October 13, 1952, ATG merged with the newly founded Kraftverkehr Bad Salzungen.

In the course of 1955, the bus line to the Hofferbertaue was opened in Eisenach.

The tram route into the Mariental was converted to buses as early as 1958.

The connection of the residential area in Eisenacher Ernst-Thälmann-Straße with a bus line took place in 1963.

With the closure of the Wutha – Ruhla railway line , buses took over sole operation of the line as part of a change of mode of transport on September 24, 1967. The Ruhla bus station is now where the train station used to be.

Overview of the former railway lines

The Immelborn-Bad Liebenstein-Steinbach line was served by buses of VEB Kraftverkehr Bad Salzungen from August 4, 1968 after the rail connection was discontinued.

In 1969, the tram route to the Eisenach hospital from Mühlhauser Strasse was converted to buses.

The previously independent VEB Kraftverkehr Bad Salzungen was merged on July 1, 1970 with the operations in Meiningen and Schmalkalden to form the new large company VEB Kraftverkehr Schmalkalden with around 1,150 employees, 197 buses, 314 trucks and 92 cars.

City traffic in Bad Salzungen with initially seven journeys was opened in the course of 1974. By 1979 the traffic was expanded to 36 trips.

After 78 years of operation , VEB (K) Innerstädtischer Verkehr switched tram operations to bus traffic on January 1, 1976 by transferring traffic to VEB Kraftverkehr Eisenach.

1990 until today

In 1990 VEB Kraftverkehr Eisenach became part of the West Thuringian Transport Company. Subsequently, the municipalization took place as Kommunale Personalennahverkehrsgesellschaft Eisenach mbH.

Also in 1990, on May 1, the VEB Kraftverkehr Bad Salzungen, which had been independent again since April 1, 1990, initially became the Kraftverkehrsgesellschaft Bad Salzungen mbH, which was then renamed the Bad Salzungen mbH (PNG) on December 17, 1991 .

In 2006 the first timetable information pillars were set up in Eisenach city traffic. In addition to a clock, the next departure times are shown on a display as well as static information (line network, etc.).

The newly built Eisenach depot was put into operation on February 9, 2016. It is located on Eichrodter Weg.

The new bus station was completed in July 2017 and now serves as the central bus station (ZOB) for local public transport in the Wartburg city of Eisenach and the surrounding area (Wartburg district).

On the occasion of the Electromobility Day in Eisenach on September 8, 2018, a funding decision for 850,000 euros was handed over to the company for the purchase of two battery buses. On this day there was an hourly scheduled service from the market in Eisenach to the Wartburg with an Ebusco battery bus.

State Secretary Möller handed over the funding notification to Lord Mayor Wolf and VUW Board Member Schauerte

On May 1, 2019, the completely revised urban transport network went into operation. For the first time, Stregda will be connected by city buses, as will the western districts of Hörschel , Neuenhof , Wartha and Göringen as well as the villa area in the south quarter . Furthermore, the first night bus line N35 goes into operation on Saturday / Sunday night.

The research project "carla", accompanied by Professor Knie from WZB Berlin , was presented on May 4, 2019 as part of the Electromobility Day in Bad Salzungen . The VUW provides 5 electric cars that can be rented. In return, the tenant can take passengers with them for € 1 per km via an app solution.

The mayor of Eisenach, Katja Wolf , was able to open the VUW's central control center for the entire VUW service area on May 14, 2019. The entire operational business is controlled from Eisenach.

Wartburgmobil put the first hybrid bus - a Scania Omnicity LE - into operation in Geisa on October 9, 2019 . The bus runs in regional and neighboring local traffic.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic , the regular service was shut down in 4 stages. On March 17, 2020, first joined the holiday schedule in force and the driver's area in buses was police tape from the passenger area separately, the passenger then closed on March 19, 2020 Service Center and some lines have been completely set. March 25, 2020 then brought the Saturday permanent timetable for the Eisenach city bus , and as the last stage, all Sunday and public holiday traffic was suspended from March 29, 2020. On April 14, 2020, the passenger service centers were reopened with appropriate protective measures ( mouth and nose protection for employees, spit and sneeze protection windows, etc.). The company's first village bus went into operation in Brunnhartshausen on May 6, 2020. Employees who live on site use a minibus to operate the branch lines that make the main lines slow and uneconomical. An expansion to an on-demand traffic is planned.
