Trunk line
In a traffic system, a trunk route is the route that was typically first built in the early days of the traffic system and that became the core of its traffic network.
Historical meaning of the term
Historically, the term trunk line describes the first railway line built by a railway company . Alternatively, one speaks here of an original route or core route . For example, the Albtalbahn is the nucleus of today's network of the Albtal-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft . Another historical example is the trunk line of the Cologne-Mindener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft .
Modern meaning of the term
In the local public transport system, the trunk line is a section that is shared by several or all lines of a network and has at least two stops . This corridor is usually in a central location, for example in the city center of a large city. At one or both ends of the trunk line, the lines branch out in different directions, mostly into the city districts and suburbs of an agglomeration .
