The trunk line II is one of three trunk lines of the Stadtbahn in Dortmund . It runs roughly from the northeast to the south and southwest. Light rail operations began on September 26, 1992, even if a high-speed tram line was opened in northeast Dortmund on May 15, 1976.

history

As a preliminary operation, a high-speed tram line from Derne to Grevel was opened on May 15, 1976 , this was built completely free of intersections and on a dam or elevated in an elevated position.

After the opening of the first trunk line in 1984, construction work began on the second trunk line on April 16, 1985, for which tram lines 402 and 406 in the area north of Reinoldikirche were diverted.

When the tunnel between Brunnenstrasse and Stadtgarten and light rail operations on the U42 began on September 26, 1992, extensive line changes were made, as the southern trunk line still had to be connected to the tram network. Among other things, a previously non-existent 408 tram line was introduced. The northern section of the Stadtbahn was connected to the rest of the tram network and the depots via an operating route from the tunnel mouth on the surface via Bornstrasse and Jägerstrasse to the route to the Westfalenhütte.

In 1995 the U42 was extended by one station to Städtische Klinken , then the route to the Westfalenstadion was relocated underground in stages: on June 2, 1996 from Stadtgarten via Saarlandstrasse to the police headquarters and on May 21, 1998 from the police headquarters to Westfalenhallen . This route is served by the U46, which - in contrast to today - drove from Grevel to Westfalenhallen, the U42 ended at Brunnenstrasse instead.

In 2002, the southern route to Hombruch was converted to light rail, on June 16, 2002 the U42 was extended by Städtische Kliniken to Hombruch and at the same time extended at the northern end to Grevel, the tram line 408 was discontinued.

The north branch of the U42 outside the tunnel is a completely above-ground route in the north of Dortmund. It runs from the tunnel exit north of Brunnenstrasse station through the Nordmarkt district to Schulte Rödding. There the bus lines 410, 411, 412, 414 and C5 (the latter operated by the VKU ) serve a bus stop between the tracks. The route has continued since 1976 via Kirchderne and from there crossing-free in the embankment to Scharnhorst and Grevel. An extension from Grevel to Lanstrop is still planned, but is currently unsuccessful, among other things, because of the priority protection for the village character of Grevel.

Tram as a forerunner

The Bornstraße - Kirchderne section of the U42 goes back to a tram route of the district railway that was opened in two stages from 1907 to 1908 , while that at Schulte Rödding on the Fredenbaum - Minister Stein - Kemminghausen - Schulte Rödding - Kirchderne - Derne Bhf. - Altenderne - Lünen came across. After the section Minister Stein - Schulte Rödding was closed in 1914, the northern part of the route was taken over by the Bornstrasse line, on December 31, 1936 the section from Derne (city limits on the autobahn) to Lünen was closed, and in 1976 with the commissioning of the express tram to Grevel the section Kirchderne - Derne. Behind the Schulte Rödding stop, today's route leads past the Franz-Zimmer-Siedlung, after which the express tram route from 1976 begins, which leads partially elevated via Kirchderne and Scharnhorst Zentrum to Grevel. In 1965 it was actually planned to connect this route through Scharnhorst Mitte to Grevel to the line at that time through the Springorumstraße to Scharnhorst Süd.

The U42 south route runs underground from Stadtgarten via Städtische Kliniken , the Möllerbrücke S-Bahn station to the Theodor-Fliedner-Heim stop. After two stops you will reach the Barop parking garage . Shortly thereafter, the Hombruch district follows , there is a stop at the indoor swimming pool , then the route ends on Grotenbachstrasse.

Tram as a forerunner

The route was built in three phases from 1925 to 1927: In 1925 it was opened from the city center to the southwest cemetery (later loop of the Nicolaikirche ). On January 23, 1927 the extension to Barop took place, on November 15, 1927 Hombruch was reached. Between Barop and Hombruch, the line replaced the last section of the meter- gauge trunk line of the Hörder Kreisbahn (Aplerbeck - Hörde - Brünninghausen - Barop - Hombruch Amtshaus), which had been in operation since 1898, even before large parts of the Hörde district were incorporated . During the expansion of the Ruhr Schnellweg (former B1, today A40), the junction with the Krückenweg was also expanded so that it did not cross (until 1960). In the course of this, the Krückenweg was also expanded to the northern edge of Barop and the tram was relocated to the special railway body in the central position. An unrealized branch line was also planned for the development of the newly founded Technical University via the Universitätsstraße on the southern edge of the university, which had remained torso.

The short route U46 south connects the city garden with the Westfalenhallen and the Westfalenstadion . Today's light rail route is completely underground and is therefore more of a subway.

Tram as a forerunner

The route was put into operation in 1898 as a tram line, originally branching off the slightly older ring tram at the Wallring at Wißstraßentor (later Grafenhof , today the place of the old synagogue ). It then led over Hohe Straße past the stone tower to the Friedrich-Wilhelm block (today Signal-Iduna-Park station ) on the Bergisch-Märkische Bahn (today Hellwegbahn). From there it was not far to the excursion destination Steinerne Brücke (over the Emscher), where, in addition to the restaurant of the same name, there was the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Thal summer tavern , large gardens with a (ice-skating) pond and a cycling track. From February 4, 1899, it was possible to switch to the meter-gauge Hörder Kreisbahn to Brünninghausen, Barop and Hombruch. Later, as a straight traffic lane between the Burgtor and Wißstraßentor, Hansastraße was cut across the city center, which was then also to accommodate the tram. In 1905 it was still under construction, already marked on a city map from 1910. In 1913, line 3 ran from Fredenbaum to the southern terminus, now known as the Volkspark . In 1927 the end of the coupling was replaced by a by-pass, in 1959 by the still existing turning loop on Bolmker Weg. As early as 1967, the line was laid in a tunnel that was then only about 200 m long, at the southern end of which was the first underground station in Dortmund at the Westfalenhalle. When the first main route opened on June 2, 1984, line 3 (from 1980: 403) was discontinued and the route was instead served by line 406 (Kirchderne - Westfalenstadion; from September 1992 Marten - Westfalenstadion). This remained until 1996, then the route was moved underground and the tram line 406 to the tram line U46.
