The transport company circle Unna mbH (VKU) is a transport company WVG group in the circle Unna . The shareholders of the VKU are the district of Unna, the Westfälische Verkehrsgesellschaft (WVG), the cities of Bergkamen , Kamen , Lünen , Schwerte , Selm , Unna and Werne as well as the communities of Bönen and Holzwickede .
history
On July 27, 1907, the Unna – Kamen – Werne (UKW) railway was founded. It operated an interurban tram between these cities from 1909 to the end of 1950 . In 1950 the company was renamed Verkehrsgesellschaft Kreis Unna mbH (VKU), as it now operated mainly with buses . On January 1, 1976, the VKU took over the bus service of Stadtwerke Lünen with the depot and its buses. Since 1980 the VKU has been working under the umbrella of the Westfälische Verkehrsgesellschaft (WVG) founded in 1970 , which acts as a service company for the VKU transport company and other Westphalian sister transport companies such as RLG and RVM.
Offer structure
In 2018, the VKU carried around 15.27 million passengers, the operating performance was 8.146 million wagon-kilometers, of which 8.054 million were in public service. The total length of 1963 km with 107 lines was served by 79 own buses and 106 buses that were rented from around 25 private companies and operated on behalf of VKU . The rented service was almost half of the driving service. The number of employees was 231 full-time positions.
In 2008 the VKU had a network of routes totaling 2248 km in length. With 77 own buses and 95 leased buses, 116 lines, 106 of them in public transport, were served. There were 7,817,000 wagon-km on the buses, 7,536,000 of which were on public transport. 13,983,000 people were transported, of which 13,506,000 were on regular public transport. In addition, around 6,791,100 students were promoted. At that time, the VKU generated 16,059,000 euros in passenger transport .
The VKU offer express bus routes (letter S + number), regional bus routes (letter R + number), direct bus routes (letter D + number), city bus routes (letter C + number), night bus routes (letter N + number), taxi bus routes (letter T + number ) as well as call and collect taxis . Fast bus lines are accelerated lines of regional bus traffic in cycle operation . Compared to the regional buses, express buses only serve selected stops on the route. The VKU currently operates the following express bus lines:

Most buses on the S30 line have hotspots that give passengers free internet access.
There is a connection guarantee at the Bergkamen bus station on the S20 , S30 and S81 express bus lines , i.e. H. the buses all leave at the same time, so that passengers can transfer directly from one express bus to the next.
Regiobus lines
The Regio buses are buses in regional transport in intermittent mode. They connect the cities in the Unna district with each other, run every 60 or 30 minutes and offer connections to the Deutsche Bahn local transport network . Tariff
The VKU is a member of the Verkehrsgemeinschaft Ruhr-Lippe (VRL). The Westphalian tariff applies . For trips from the municipalities of Lünen, Bergkamen, Kamen, Unna, Holzwickede and Schwerte to the VRR area and vice versa, the tariffs of the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) apply.
Trivia
The buses of the VKU were previously numbered. For a number of years, however, they have had numbers according to the pattern JJ-6x, where JJ represents the last two digits of the year and x can stand for all digits with the exception of 0 . In theory, numbering beyond 69 is also possible.
Up until the year 2012, the numbers were given consecutively on the license plates of the buses, most recently in the UN VK… series. The last bus marked in this way received the registration number UN VK 404. There was also the registration number UN VK 406 for the bus 06-63, which originally had the registration number UN VK 360. In 2013 this practice was changed. Since then, the buses have had license plates according to the pattern UN VK + car number, where the number corresponds to the number of the bus, e.g. UN VK 1664, the fourth bus from 2016.
