The Dortmunder Stadtwerke AG (DSW21) is a municipal company in Dortmund , which is 100% owned by the city of Dortmund. The number in the company name refers to the 21st century. DSW21 (previously only DSW) existed for 150 years in 2007. The development of the company began on June 19, 1857, when the Dortmunder Actien-Gesellschaft for gas lighting was founded.

In December 2007, a merger between DSW21 and Stadtwerke Bochum GmbH was discussed for the first time. Since November 9, 2007 there has been a cooperation between DEW21, Stadtwerke Bochum GmbH and their joint subsidiary Gelsenwasser AG for the storage of natural gas .

The former labor director Manfred Kossack ended his service at DSW21 on December 31, 2019. Kossack's successor on January 1, 2020 was the former chairman of the supervisory board of the Kölner Verkehrs-Betriebe , Harald Kraus. Kraus has been on the board of DSW21 since October 1, 2019 as part of a handover phase from Kossack to Kraus. With the appointment of Kraus, the longstanding personal union of the Labor Director at DSW21 and DEW21 ended.

On January 1, 2020, the former authorized signatory in the finance department, Jörg Jacoby, was appointed CFO of DSW21.
