The Stadtwerke Bochum GmbH is a municipal company in Bochum . The owners are the City of Bochum (5%) and Energie- und Wasserversorgung Mittleres Ruhrgebiet GmbH (ewmr) (95%), which in turn is 57% owned by the City of Bochum. The other shareholders of ewmr are the cities of Herne and Witten .

history

The city ​​of Bochumer Gas-Anstalt was founded on April 13, 1855 , thus ushering in a new supply age. The gas company stood next to the Bochumer Verein on Gußstahlstrasse. The gas works near today's Westpark was the first in Westphalia . In the first year, 150 households in the city with its 6,600 inhabitants were supplied, as well as 54 gas lamps .

In 1892, the first power station was built near Bochum's town hall , initially to supply the town hall and some households with electricity.

After the Second World War , the municipal utilities gathered their administration near the new central station; The drafts for the modern Stadtwerke high-rise were drawn up in 1952 by the architect Ferdinand Keilmann from the municipal building department.

In December 2004, Stadtwerke Bochum moved into its new administration building with a height of 56 meters, 16 floors, 5 flat floors, a gross floor area of ​​21,300 m² and equipment according to low energy standards. The architects were Gatermann + Schossig and the general contractor Walter Bau AG.

The company is a provider of electricity, gas, water and district heating. As a new division, Stadtwerke Bochum offers telecommunication via fiber optic lines in some parts of Bochum. The Energy Services and Energy Efficiency Products division was created in 2016, offering solar roofs, charging stations, heating packages, cooling packages and LED packages.

Stadtwerke Bochum was the name sponsor of the rewirpower stadium of VfL Bochum from 2006 to 2016 .

Stadtwerke Bochum has been offering its customers an app for Android and iOS smartphones since the beginning of 2016. It includes a digital customer card, access to the online customer center and the option to send the meter reading by photo.

Holdings

Bochumer Stadtwerke and Dortmunder Stadtwerke each own 50% of Wasser und Gas Westfalen GmbH. This holds 92.9% of the shares in Gelsenwasser AG .

Stadtwerke Bochum Holding GmbH holds shares in STEAG GmbH through KSBG Kommunale Steag Beteiligungsgesellschaft GmbH & Co. KG together with five other municipal utilities .

Event "Atrium Talk"

Since February 2008, the company has held the atrium talk twice a year as part of its public relations work . A moderated round of talks with a politician or an artist took place in front of invited guests in the administration building of the Stadtwerke. Among others, Hans-Dietrich Genscher , Richard von Weizsäcker , Joschka Fischer , Joachim Gauck and Peter Maffay were guests at this event, which was organized by Sascha Hellen (owner of Hellen Medien Projekte GmbH and organizer of the Steiger Award ).

After the SPD politician Peer Steinbrück had been criticized in the media in November 2012 for receiving a fee of 25,000 euros as part of his appearance in November 2011, the company stated that the series of events was designed with the idea that the guests paid their fee donate to a charitable cause. However, it had been neglected to inform Steinbrück of this. The Stadtwerke then signed a declaration of cease and desist stating that Mr. Steinbrück was never and in no way asked to donate his fee. On November 9, 2012, the municipal utilities announced that the atrium talk will be discontinued. Stadtwerke Bochum terminated all contracts with Sascha Hellen and sued the Bochum regional court for repayment of 250,000 euros due to non-performance. In a settlement concluded in 2014, both sides waived mutual repayment claims in 2014.
