Steiger Award
The Steiger Awards have been given annually since 2005 to personalities who have shown particular commitment in the areas of tolerance , charity , music , film , media , sport , the environment or the growing together of the European community of states .
Naming
The award is named after the Steiger , a supervisory officer who, according to mining tradition, stands for virtues such as straightforwardness, openness, humanity and tolerance. He is responsible for part of the mine and the people under him. Outside of the Ruhr area, the term is mainly known from a popular miner's song , the Steigerlied ("Glückauf, Glückauf; the Steiger is coming ...").
event
The award was initiated and organized from the start by Sascha Hellen , the owner of Hellen Medien Projekte GmbH. He finances the gala event with entrance fees. The tickets cost 190 euros. The winners do not receive any prize money. The winners are chosen freely by Sascha Hellen; Criteria are not known.
In the first two years the gala event took place in the Hohensyburg casino . From 2007 to 2012 the venue was the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum . The ceremony took place in 2013 Dortmunder U instead. In 2014 the event took place in the Henrichshütte in Hattingen . Hellen is planning the next Steiger Award at Zeche Zollverein in mid-March 2019. Hellen came under fire here because he did not make the agreed six-figure advance payment to the local company. At the end of July 2019, Hellen was sentenced to two years imprisonment and 200 social hours for fraud in twelve cases and embezzlement in two cases by the Bochum regional court. He is thus considered a criminal record.
criticism
In 2012, the Turkish Prime Minister Erdoğan should accept the award for 50 years of German-Turkish friendship. On March 17, Erdogan canceled his participation because of a helicopter crash in Afghanistan in which twelve Turkish army personnel and two civilians were killed. The intention to honor Erdoğan caused astonishment among Armenians , Kurds and Alevis as well as among Turkish oppositionists. There were then protests and calls for rallies to draw attention to the human rights violations for which Erdoğan is responsible. The German Association of Journalists had criticized the award because of restricted freedom of the press and freedom of expression in Turkey. On the afternoon of the award ceremony, a peaceful demonstration took place in Bochum with 22,000 participants. Further criticism came from the federal working group of immigrant associations as well as from the ranks of the CSU and the Greens and from Reporters Without Borders . The publicist Ralph Giordano wrote an open letter to Gerhard Schröder , which was to give the laudation to Erdoğan.
As part of the Steiger Awards 2015, there was a dispute with the award winner Hardy Krüger . He and his wife had been promised the reimbursement of travel expenses for the journey from the USA in the amount of 17,000 euros. However, there was no reimbursement. Kruger later returned the award to Hellen and engaged a lawyer.
Conflict between the organizer and the sponsors
Hellen found himself in various legal proceedings and legal disputes with former sponsors such as the Stadtwerke Bochum. Points of contention were the Atrium Talk, the Steiger Award and a planned Paul McCartney concert in Bochum. The Bochum public prosecutor's office is investigating him for fraud. Stadtwerke Bochum terminated all contracts with Hellen and sued the Bochum regional court for repayment of 250,000 euros due to non-rendered services. In February 2013, Sparkasse Bochum and Hellen jointly announced that they would terminate the existing sponsorship agreement. The Bochum public prosecutor announced on September 3, 2014: “Against the background of the conclusion of the civil law dispute between long-standing business partners, the Bochum public prosecutor, with the consent of the Bochum District Court, closed the investigation against Sascha Hellen on September 3, 2014 in accordance with Section 153 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, as a possible guilt would be regarded as too small. ”It was also taken into account that Hellen“ has no criminal record and the possible act was a long time ago ”. The municipal utilities only put their repayment claim in February 2014 at EUR 241,560.
On August 12, 2015, the insolvency proceedings for Hellen Medien Projekte GmbH were registered with the Bochum district court, file number: 80 IN 412/15. This procedure was discontinued in mid-September 2015. On July 5, 2017, insolvency proceedings against Hellen Medien Projekte GmbH were again registered at the Bochum district court, file number: 80 IN 335/17.
Award ceremony
The winners will be honored with a laudation from another celebrity. A black piece of coal is presented , which is sealed in a lead glass ball and rests on a crystal glass base . The cup made by Joska Kristall is around 25 centimeters high and weighs over 2 kilograms.
