Jürgen R. Großmann (born March 4, 1952 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ) is a German manager , entrepreneur and functionary . From October 2007 to June 2012 he was CEO of RWE AG . He is also a German steel entrepreneur: from 1993 to 2006 he was managing partner of the Georgsmarienhütte steelworks ; Since 1997 he has been the sole shareholder of Georgsmarienhütte Holding and, as the sole shareholder of Stego Vermögensverwaltung, is owned by RGM Holding . According to Manager Magazin, his assets amounted to around 1.35 billion euros in 2008, making him one of the 100 richest Germans .

Jürgen Großmann comes from a family that is closely connected to the steel industry . His father was an auditor and head of accounting at a steel mill in Bochum. Großmann attended the state high school in Mülheim an der Ruhr and passed his Abitur there in 1970. He studied iron and steel engineering from 1970 to 1977 at the Technical University of Clausthal , economics at the Georg-August University of Göttingen and the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg as well as business administration at the Purdue University in West Lafayette (Indiana, USA). Großmann has been a member of Corps Montania Clausthal and Hasso-Borussia Freiburg since his student days .

During his studies he completed several internships abroad (South Africa, Japan, USA, Brazil, France). He has also received various scholarships , including from the German National Academic Foundation , the Rotary Foundation , the German Marshall Fund , the Atlantik-Brücke “Young Leader” and the French American Foundation. Großmann wrote his diploma thesis in Brazil and his doctoral thesis at the TU Berlin , combined with study trips to South Africa, Brazil, Venezuela and Mexico.

From 1980 to 1993 he worked at Klöckner-Werke , where he was initially an assistant to the executive board, then managing director of several subsidiaries and finally a member of the executive board, from 1991 responsible for the entire steel division.

In 1993, Großmann took over the ailing Georgsmarienhütte GmbH (formerly Klöckner Edelstahl) for a symbolic price of two marks from the Klöckner-Werke in a management buy-out and became a managing partner . In 1997 he became the sole shareholder and managing director of Georgsmarienhütte Holding, which includes 32 companies in the fields of raw material recycling, steel production and processing, forging technology, railway technology, iron and steel casting and plant construction. The group of companies generated sales of over 2.7 billion euros in 2013 and had around 10,000 employees. For the 150th anniversary of the company in 2006, the non-profit foundation Stahlwerk Georgsmarienhütte was founded on the initiative of Großmann . At the end of 2006 Jürgen Großmann handed over the management of Georgsmarienhütte to his companion Peter van Hüllen.

On October 1, 2007, Großmann became CEO of RWE. He was the preferred candidate for the chairman of the supervisory board and former chairman of the WestLB board, Thomas R. Fischer . Harry Roels left the company shortly before the end of his term of office on September 30, 2007 because his successor Großmann refused to allow the terms of office to overlap.

In August 2010, Großmann initiated the Energy Policy Appeal , a lobbying initiative of the four major electricity companies to promote the extension of the service life of German nuclear power plants. The Tagesspiegel wrote: “Jürgen Großmann fought like no other for the extension of the term last summer.” At the same time, with RWE Innogy , he built up a broad-based company for all types of renewable energies and invested in power generation in Western Europe and Turkey.

Großmann had a five-year contract with RWE. On August 8, 2011, RWE announced Großmann's early departure as of June 30, 2012. His successor was Peter Terium .

Großmann is the owner of the luxury hotel Kulm in Arosa , Switzerland. In Haus Tenge in Osnabrück, he ran the restaurant la vie , which had three Michelin Guide stars, until 2018 .

Private

Since 1985, Großmann has been married to Dagmar Sikorski-Großmann, who is the managing partner of Sikorski Musikverlage and holds a leading position in various associations in the German music industry. He has three children with her, Johanna, Anne-Marie and Quirin. According to a company announcement ( glueckauf 1/2015), they have taken on functions as shareholders and also mandates on the supervisory boards of the GMH Group.

Großmann was the owner of a sailing yacht called Germania Nova , which was included in the list of the 200 largest sailing yachts in the world in 2015. The sailing yacht is a replica of the Germania that Bertha Krupp had built in 1908; it was sold to new owners in 2018.

Großmann is also a member of the WSA Board of Directors and Executive Committee, the board of Atlantik-Brücke , the Tönissteiner Kreis and the American Council on Germany and Honorary Chairman of the German-British Society . In 2013 he founded the pro-European non-profit association United Europe eV together with the former Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel. He was previously a participant in the Jung-Königswinter meeting of the German-British Society .

He was voted “Global Leader for tomorrow” by the World Economic Forum Geneva / Davos. Jürgen Großmann is an Honorary Senate Member of the German International Graduate School of Management (GISMA) in Hanover. In 2011 he also took part in the founding of the initiative “Help for people with ALS”.

Awards

Großmann received an honorary doctorate from Purdue University (USA). He is the recipient of the Lower Saxony Prize 2001 and the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class. In 1997, Großmann was awarded the Courage Prize for his work in securing the Georgsmarienhütte steel site .

In 2007 he received the Grand Decoration of Honor in Gold for services to the Republic of Austria . In the same year, the Atlantik-Brücke presented him with the Vernon A. Walters Award for his services to German-American friendship.

In 2010 he received the negative Dinosaur of the Year award from the Naturschutzbund Deutschland for his lobbying work and influencing the federal government to extend the service life of nuclear power plants.

In 2018 he received an honorary doctorate from the Clausthal University of Technology .
