The work was named after King George V and Queen Marie , the last ruling couple of the Kingdom of Hanover .

Georgsmarienhütte is one of the leading European suppliers of bar steel, semi-finished products and bright steel made of quality steel and structural steel and generates 80% of its sales with the automotive industry . It is part of the Georgsmarienhütte group of companies ( GMH Group ), an association of over twenty medium-sized companies in Germany, Austria, Australia and the USA.

The electric arc furnace at Georgsmarienhütte

The Georgsmarienhütte belonged to the Klöckner Group from 1923 until the loss-making plant was acquired in 1993 by the Klöckner manager Jürgen Großmann for a symbolic amount and has been the sole property of Georgsmarienhütte Holding GmbH since 1997 . The company commissioned the first direct current electric arc furnace in Germany in 1994 and switched steel production from blast furnace converter operation to the direct current electric arc process. This made the steelworks independent of iron ore and coal, but dependent on the considerably fluctuating scrap price . In the same year, after a loss in previous years, profit was generated again for the first time.

The changeover to the electric arc process gradually changed the external appearance of the iron and steel works: On August 24, 1996, the old blast furnace was blown up, in 1999 the gasometer built in 1929 on Klöcknerstrasse was blown up, and the second gas container was blown up in 2000.

In 2002 a major investment was made in a new continuous caster and the rolling mill was modernized . Both Chancellor Gerhard Schröder and Chancellor Angela Merkel (2005) visited the plant. In 2006 the new 160-ton walking beam furnace was completed as part of the rolling mill. In 2006 GMH celebrated its 150th anniversary. At a ceremony to which Angela Merkel, Christian Wulff , customers, friends and relatives of the GMH were invited, the founding by George V and Queen Marie was commemorated with many guests. On the occasion of its 150th anniversary, the company founded the non-profit "Stiftung Stahlwerk Georgsmarienhütte". At the end of the 2006 financial year, the owner of Georgsmarienhütte, Jürgen Großmann, left the management. However, he remained the owner. On September 1, 2007, the first melt was run with the new LF 2 ladle furnace . In 2008, the continuous caster was again modernized and a new straightening and testing line was commissioned in the finishing shop of the final operations.
