The Courage Prize is a prize that is awarded in the Lower Saxon town of Bad Iburg ( Osnabrück district ) to people and institutions that have made a special contribution to the common good .

Courage Committee

The prize is awarded by the association “Komitee Courage Bad Iburg e. V. “The prize is endowed with 5000 euros and is awarded annually at the end of September. The “Komitee Courage” has existed since 1995; The initiator and honorary member of the association is Gerd Schöwing, a businessman from Bad Iba. The Courage Prize was awarded for the first time in 1996. The first three winners received a lapel pin in the shape of the letter C, since the fourth award they receive a first of the Wallenhorst artist Lutz Sundorf and now from the Osnabrück artist Volker-Johannes Trieb designed sculpture .

Before the award ceremony in the Knights' Hall of Iburg Castle , the winner will be entered in the Golden Book of Bad Iburg, followed by “Iburger Friedensbrot and Friedenswein”. Until 2016 there was the panel discussion “Conversation by the fireplace” in the banquet hall of the castle; in 2017 it was replaced by a keynote speech. After the award there is the “Iburger Fisch-Schmaus”.

People from politics, culture, society and business took part in the panel discussions, for example the journalist Michel Friedman and Tilman Zülch ( Society for Threatened Peoples ) in 1998 , Hellmuth Karasek in 2001 , literary critic and university professor, and Christian Wulff in 2003 , then Prime Minister of Lower Saxony , 2004 Rudolf Seiters , former Federal Minister of the Interior and President of the German Red Cross , 2006 Ursula Engelen-Kefer ( DGB ) or 2009 Asfa-Wossen Asserate , management consultant and author.

The most prominent award winner in 2009 was Queen Silvia of Sweden , who founded the World Childhood Foundation in 1999. The laudation was given by Richard Oetker , the winner of the previous year . The 2010 award winner, Peter Maffay , unveiled a stele on Hanseplatz in Bad Iburg , commemorating the founding of the Courage Committee in 1995 and the aim of the award. Franz Müntefering gave the laudation for Maffay . The first prize winner in 1996 was Harry Jahns (born March 24, 1933 in Łódź ), who attended the Lower Saxon Home School Iburg in Iburg Castle from 1949 to 1954 , where he worked as a teacher from 1970 and initiated the castle concerts.

The initiator of the award, Gerd Schöwing, was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in 2018 for his commitment.
