Location of the municipality of Wallenhorst in the district of Osnabrück | ||

Wallenhorst is an independent municipality in the district of Osnabrück . Due to the territorial reform in 1972, the current municipality was formed through the merger of the previously independent municipalities of Wallenhorst, Hollage , Rulle and Lechtingen . These former communities now form the districts of the community of Wallenhorst.
Geographical location
Wallenhorst is located in the Osnabrücker Land on the southern foothills of the Wiehen Mountains in the middle of the TERRA.vita nature and geopark . The community belongs to the catchment area of the south bordering city of Osnabrück and is about 7 km away from the city center. Other neighboring communities are Bramsche in the north and Belm in the east (both in Lower Saxony ) and Lotte in North Rhine-Westphalia in the west.
The reference height of the German main height network , the normal height zero , is fixed at a height reference point at the New St. Alexander Church. The geopotential elevation of this point was determined in 1986 within the framework of the European leveling network ( UELN ) and forms the basis for all height measurements in Germany.
history
In the Rulle district, the Helmich Stones , a large stone grave of the megalithic culture, bear witness to the oldest traces of settlement. The Wittekindsburg is also located in Rulle . It was an early medieval fortification.
In the oldest part of Wallenhorst, the old village east of today's center , there was probably a pre-Christian sanctuary from the 8th century. It was located on the grounds of the Meyerhof , in the vicinity of which there were other farms. The foundation of the sanctuary was partially used around 800 for the construction of the Old St. Alexander Church . Wallenhorst was first mentioned in the Latin legend De miraculis sancti Alexandri as Walonhurst , where in 851 Wetrih, who had been deprived of his sight, ran towards the Christian martyr Alexander of Rome and miraculously regained his eyesight: Alter vero vir nomine Weltrih oculorum lumine privatus in eodem in villa Walonhurst sancto martyri Alexandro occurrit meritisque eius adiuvantibus visa recepit . The "Hörnschen Hof", which has been documented since 1223, but is probably about 200 years older, was also a Meierhof. The farm north of the old village in the direction of Pente has not been owned by the Hörnschemeyer clan named after him since 1910/11 .
After the completion of the New St. Alexander Church towards the end of the 19th century, the center of Wallenhorst shifted west to the New Village . The new church was built near the 15th century Gothic Anna Chapel on the Bokholt. The Bokholt was the meeting place for the monastery estates of the Prince Diocese of Osnabrück in the 15th and 16th centuries. The old village east of federal highway 68 retained its rural character.
On November 19, 1966, the bridge under construction on the B 68 over Ruller Strasse collapsed. As concreting work was in progress, the witch's stone next to the bridge was largely spilled under the still liquid concrete. It was not exposed again until 1997.
Incorporations
On July 1, 1972, the communities Hollage, Lechtingen and Rulle were incorporated.

Denominations
Wallenhorst is predominantly Catholic, which is reflected in the municipality's coat of arms in the form of a cross, the four diamonds indicate the four districts. Around 15,000 Catholics belong to the three parishes St. Alexander (Wallenhorst, Lechtingen), St. Josef (Hollage and Hollage-Ost) and St. Johannes ( Rulle ). In addition to the Catholic, there are two Evangelical Lutheran parishes: the Andreas parish (Hollage and Alt-Wallenhorst) and the Paul Gerhardt parish ( Lechtingen , Rulle and the Osnabrück district of Haste ) with a good 5,000 members.

coat of arms
Current coat of arms
Blazon : In green a silver ring, placed over it in the manner of an inclined cross, four silver diamonds, one point towards the center of the shield; the tips do not touch.
The four silver diamonds point to the four former communities Wallenhorst, Hollage, Lechtingen and Rulle. The ring connects them to a common wheel, and the wheel is also the coat of arms symbol of the Bishop of Osnabrück. But it can also be interpreted as an image of the place name Wallenhorst: The wall encloses an eyrie. The cross in the middle reminds of the Saxon Wars and the Christianization of the area. Green did not appear in the coat of arms of the sub-municipalities, the color was chosen as a symbol of the living nature in order to indicate the charming surroundings of Wallenhorst.
The coat of arms was designed by the heraldist Hans-Heinrich Reclam.
Historical coat of arms
Blazon : In red, a golden wheel growing out of the lower edge of the shield, of which six spokes two are completely visible. A running golden hen on the wheel, above it in each of the shield corners a single golden paw cross.
The main character of the coat of arms is the hen. It crowns the top of the Old Alexander Church in Wallenhorst, unlike other churches, which are usually decorated with a rooster. Therefore, the hen is a special landmark and symbol of the place. The wheel is the coat of arms of the diocese and city of Osnabrück, with which there have been various relationships since the early Middle Ages. The two crosses indicate the old and the new church of the place. Gold was chosen for the pictures because the hen was previously gilded (collection letter from Auxiliary Bishop Otto Graf Bronckhorst from 1711); Red corresponds to the field mark of the Lower Saxony coat of arms .
