The Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences (formerly: University of Applied Sciences Osnabrück) is a Lower Saxony university of applied sciences with administrative headquarters in Osnabrück. It has existed in its current form since 2003. Studies began in 1971. Individual faculties go largely back to engineering schools and other higher technical schools, some of which already existed in the 1950s. Since January 1, 2003, the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences has been transformed into a legal foundation under public law . Today the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences also has an institute for music. It offers over 100 bachelor's and master's degrees as well as continuing education programs. In addition to the two locations in Osnabrück-Westerberg and Osnabrück-Haste , the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences has another location in Lingen (Ems) , which is to be further expanded as part of the 2020 University Pact. The lecture halls, seminar rooms and laboratories of the Faculties of Engineering and Computer Science (IuI), Economics and Social Sciences (WiSo) and the Institute for Music (IfM) are located in Albrechtstraße and Caprivistraße, in the Osnabrück district of Westerberg. The Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Landscape Architecture (AuL) with its teaching buildings, laboratories, greenhouses and test farms is located in the Osnabrück district of Haste in the middle of an approx. 5 hectare park at the foothills of the Wiehen Mountains . The Faculty of Management, Culture and Technology (MKT) is located on the Lingen campus.

History of the college

The origins of today's Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences lie in previous institutions of tertiary education . Today's Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science emerged from the "State Engineering School Osnabrück" founded in 1962. The origin of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Landscape Architecture is the "Higher Agricultural School" in Quakenbrück , which was founded in 1936. After this institution moved to Osnabrück in 1952 and renamed itself to the “Engineering School for Agriculture” in 1964, it was later affiliated to the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences. Today's Institute for Music emerged from the Osnabrück Municipal Conservatory founded in 1919 and was integrated into the University of Applied Sciences in 1996.

In 1971 the “University of Applied Sciences Osnabrück” was founded as such from the various predecessor institutions and the reorganization of the business department. In 1987, a professorship for nursing science was established for the first time in the Federal Republic of Germany at the University of Applied Sciences Osnabrück , which was filled by Ruth Schröck .

From 1995 to 2000, the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences was one of the model universities in the “Model project for a trial of the global control of university budgets in Lower Saxony”, the results of which have since been incorporated into the higher education legislation of the State of Lower Saxony.

The transfer to the “University of Applied Sciences Osnabrück” in 2003 brought numerous organizational changes with it, including a. the establishment of a board of trustees (chair: Helga Schuchardt ). In 2006, the new Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences foundation was one of the largest public law foundations in terms of expenditure volume in Germany.

In 2004 the new building on the Caprivi campus on the Westerberg was inaugurated; the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences has been using the former barracks area since 1998. The orientation system on the Caprivi campus comes from Andreas Uebele . The German Network for Quality Development in Nursing was also initiated in 2004, the office of which is located at the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences and which develops nursing standards and national expert standards for nursing.

In September 2010, when the new Lower Saxony University Act came into force, the “University of Applied Sciences Osnabrück” was renamed “University of Osnabrück”. In addition, at the start of the 2010/2011 winter semester, the limit of 10,000 students at HS Osnabrück was crossed for the first time.

Today's Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science (IuI) is made up of the former departments of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and computer science as well as materials and processes, the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences (WiSo) from the former departments of economics, the Institute for Public Management, Institute for Public Administration ( Career qualification for the upper service ) and the Institute for Health Professions. The current Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Landscape Architecture (AL) emerged from the former departments of Agricultural Sciences and Landscape Architecture. In 2011, the Faculty of Management, Culture and Technology (MKT) was set up as a new organizational superstructure at the Lingen location, consisting of the former Department for Communication and Society, Department for Management and Technology and the Department for Dual Study Programs, a cooperation with the Emsland University of Cooperative Education , emerged. The new Lingen campus was opened in October 2012 after Halls I / II of the former Lingen railway repair shop were expanded.

In the 2011/12 winter semester, the WiSo Faculty introduced the new and so far unique Bachelor's degree in Applied Economics (BA). In February 2012, the cooperative research college “FamiLe - Family Health in the Life Course” was opened together with the University of Witten / Herdecke .

On April 19, 2013 the groundbreaking ceremony took place for an extension on the Westerberg, which is to be used jointly by the University and University of Osnabrück. International cooperation

Most faculties of the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences offer European / international courses with a one-year stay abroad at one of the many partner universities.

The WiSo faculty offers an MBA program in cooperation with the British Buckinghamshire New University . It takes place as a three-year extra-occupational course with presence phases and serves to acquire management knowledge and leadership skills. A team of students from the MKT faculty led by Prof. Dr. In 2015 Gerd Terörde set a world record for the fastest acceleration of an electric kart in 2.635 seconds from 0 to 60 mph (approx. 100 km / h).

The Westerberg campus can be reached by bus lines 11, 17 and M2. Bus travel is free with the semester ticket. The location in Osnabrück-Haste can be reached (also with a semester ticket) with the city and regional bus routes M1,584, 585, 586 and the X610.
