Ruth Antonie Klara Schröck (born July 7, 1931 in Berlin ) is a German nurse, "Registered Nurse" (RN) and specialist nurse for psychiatry and German nursing scientist . From 1987 onwards she taught as the first professor for nursing and social sciences in the Federal Republic of Germany at the University of Applied Sciences Osnabrück and after her retirement she moved to the department for nursing science at the University of Witten / Herdecke .

Live and act

Ruth Schröck studied philosophy , sport and biology at the Free University of Berlin . She then trained as a nurse and psychiatric nurse in Bristol , which was followed by nursing, philosophical and social science studies in Edinburgh . After the Master of Arts in 1981 she received her doctorate at Annie Altschul at the University of Edinburgh PhD .

This was followed by teaching and research activities at the Scottish universities of Edinburgh and Abertay , most recently as Professor of Nursing and Head of the Department of Health and Nursing at Queen Margaret University College Edinburgh . In 1987 Ruth Schröck was appointed to the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences as the first professor for nursing and social sciences in the Federal Republic of Germany. Among other things, she helped to set up the first nursing-related diploma course, which was opened in 1991. In Osnabrück there was also a further training course for nursing service managers in hospitals . She has been an emeritus since 1996.

At the University of Witten / Herdecke, she then set up and directed the first German postgraduate program from 1997, funded by the Robert Bosch Foundation . She retired from this role in 2005. Her successor was Wilfried Schnepp (1957–2020).

Ruth Schröck played an important role in the academization of nursing in Germany. Her main interest was in questions of the theory of science and the history of nursing. Inspiration for this was obtained from Erika von Amann at the nursing school at Heidelberg University . Together with the nursing scientists Hilde Steppe , Inge Vollstedt, Gerda Kaufmann and Marianne Arndt , she was one of the founding members of the German Association for Nursing Science (today: German Society for Nursing Science).

Ruth Schröck participates in the “European Network for Doctoral Nursing Programs” at the University of Surrey . She was also a member of numerous committees and commissions. Ruth Schröck moved to her retirement home in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Ruth Schröck has received numerous honors from home and abroad. The award of the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class (2017) at the age of 86 was undoubtedly of extraordinary importance not only for the life's work of the honored, but also for the entire German-speaking professional care, since the last time a German nurse, superior was 54 years ago (1963) Olga Toni Freiin von Lersner , founder and first director of the sister school of the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg (USH), has received the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class. Both nursing personalities were closely connected for decades in the educational question and academization of nursing; there were also close working relationships between USH and Ruth Schröck.

Anecdotal

  • Ruth Schröck has a fine sense of humor. During one of her numerous visits to the nursing school at Heidelberg University, she gave a lecture in the lecture hall of the newly built “head clinic”. Ruth Schröck then said that she would now also like to see the “foot clinic”.

  2. Annie Altschul came from a social democratic Jewish family in Vienna. After Austria was annexed to the German Reich in 1938, she managed to escape to London at the last minute. During the Second World War, she cared for mentally ill traumatized soldiers in London. This was a key experience in her career. That is why she later completed further training in psychiatric care. In 1984 she became Professor of Nursing Science in Edinburgh. Her book " Psychiatrische Pflege " was also translated into German. In a clinical study she conducted in psychiatric nursing research, she came to the conclusion that relationships between nurses and patients only come about through non-routine interactions. This study is one of the classics of psychiatric nursing research.
