history

The university was founded in 1875 as The Edinburgh School of Cookery and Domestic Economy by Christian Guthrie Wright and Louisa Stevenson. Wright and Stevenson were both members of the Edinburgh Association for the University Education of Women , an association that fought for women's education. The school was founded as a purely women's institute with the aim of enabling women to study while at the same time improving the nutritional situation of the working class . The lectures initially took place in the Royal Museum in Edinburgh . This offer was supplemented by public, nationwide lectures and practical demonstrations. In 1877 the school was given premises in Shandwick Place in the Haymarket district of Edinburgh.

In 1891 the school moved to Atholl Crescent, expanded its range of courses and offered accommodation for the students. In 1909 the facility was named a Central Institution and placed under the Scotch Education Department . Ethel De la Cour was appointed first director, and she held this position until 1930. That year the institution was also renamed the Edinburgh College of Domestic Science .

In 1961 the college bought the Corstorphine Campus in Clermiston , a suburb of Edinburgh. In 1970 the campus opened and two years later the name was changed to Queen Margaret College . The college subsequently expanded the range of courses, particularly in the field of health care.

The following institutions have been merged with Queen Margaret College since 1970 :

  • The Edinburgh College of Speech and Drama (founded 1929, incorporated in 1971)
  • The Edinburgh School of Speech Therapy (founded 1946, incorporated in 1975)
  • The Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh School of Physiotherapy (founded 1940, incorporated in 1978)
  • The Astley Ainslie Hospital Occupational Therapy Training Center (founded 1937, incorporated 1979)
  • The Edinburgh Foot Clinic and School of Chiropody (founded 1924, incorporated in 1984)
  • The Edinburgh School of Radiography (founded 1936, incorporated in 1992)
  • The Edinburgh University Settlement School of Art Therapy (founded 1992, incorporated 1997)

In 1992 the Privy Council gave Queen Margaret College the right to award the lower degrees . In 1998 the college was given full teaching rights, so that research, doctoral studies and habilitation have been possible there since then . As a result, the college was renamed Queen Margaret University College in 1999 . After further innovations, including the construction of a new campus, the institution was awarded university status in 2007. Since the 2007/2008 winter semester, the three previously existing campuses have been combined on the new campus near Musselburgh, east of Edinburgh.
