Carbuncle Cup
The Carbuncle Cup is an architecture award given annually by Building Design magazine for the ugliest building completed in the UK in the last twelve months .
background
The award is based on the idea of Prospect magazine , which has been presenting the Carbuncle Award since 2000. The prize is supposed to be a satire of the Stirling Prize , which is awarded by the Royal Institute of British Architects for the largest contribution to British architecture in the past year. The name of the award is derived from a comment by Prince Charles . He described Richard Rogers' proposed extension of the National Gallery of London as "a monstrous carbuncle on the face of a beloved and elegant friend". The prize was first awarded in 2006 to the Drake Circus Shopping Center in Plymouth by Chapman Taylor . A list of nominations is published each year by Building Design , which usually coincides with the nomination for the Stirling Prize . Until 2008, voting was possible on the magazine's website, and since 2009 a small group of critics has chosen the final winner.
