history

Anglia Ruskin University has its origins in a Cambridge art school founded by John Ruskin in 1858 and a college founded in Chelmsford in 1904. These two schools were merged in 1989 to form the Anglia Higher Education College . In 1991 it became the Anglia Polytechnic , a kind of technical college . It was awarded the rank of university in 1992.

The word polytechnic was initially retained in the name, the pride to show the history of the university. In 2000, the first attempt to change the name to Anglia Prior University after a former director was rejected. On September 29, 2005, the name was changed from two hundred proposals, with the approval of the Privy Council , to the current name.
