history

Newcastle University goes back to the School of Medicine and Surgery founded in 1834 . In 1852 this was attached to the University of Durham as a college and was now called the University of Durham College of Medicine . A physics college was established in 1871, which was renamed Durham College of Physical Science in 1883 . In 1934 the two colleges in Newcastle were merged to form King's College . University College in Newcastle grew faster than the rest of the university, and tensions arose. In 1952 the proposal was made to rename the university the University of Newcastle and Durham . However, this was rejected and in 1963 the division of the university was decided. The Newcastle-based King's College became the University of Newcastle upon Tyne (which is still the official name today).

The university operates the Moorbank Garden botanical garden .
