Bryan Ferry , CBE (born September 26, 1945 in Washington , England ) is a British singer and songwriter . He became known in the 1970s as a founding member and singer of the art rock band Roxy Music and for his singular, vibrato-heavy staccato singing.

Life

The son of a miner studied art at Newcastle University . During this time his love was for R&B and soul - as well as pop music (Motown), which is why he teamed up with the band Gas Board . After working as a driver and restorer, Bryan Ferry worked as an art teacher at a girls' school in London , but always pursued a career as a musician. In 1971 he founded the group Roxy Music with friends and acquaintances (including Brian Eno ) .

From 1973 Ferry also aimed for a solo career and initially specialized in cover versions of well-known songs. He liked to pick up on evergreens from the 1930s and gave the pieces their own psychological or socially critical component ( The 'in' Crowd , You Are My Sunshine ). He was increasingly gaining the reputation of an elegant rock rebel. In particular, his first two albums These Foolish Things and Another Time, Another Place contained almost exclusively cover versions of well-known pieces such as Sympathy for the Devil ( The Rolling Stones ) or Smoke Gets in Your Eyes . The cover version of the Bob Dylan classic A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall brought him his first hit as a soloist. It was only after the temporary separation from Roxy Music that Ferry presented In Your Mind, his first album with exclusively his own compositions. The music magazine Sounds praised the “vital, exciting and explosive mixture” of hard rock 'n' roll as well as soul and rhythm and blues echoes. From then on, Bryan Ferry was also perceived as a soloist by the trade press. On the LP The Bride Stripped Bare , on the other hand, he mixed cover versions of, for example, The Velvet Underground ( What Goes On ) or Sam and Dave ( Hold On I'm Coming ) with his own songs. In 1978 Roxy Music got together again and achieved new successes until 1982.

After Roxy Music's dissolution in 1983, Ferry released his most successful work as a solo artist to date with the LP Boys and Girls (UK No. 1, DE No. 9), a perfect and filigree pop album. The album also contained the hits Slave to Love and Don't Stop the Dance . Ferry was able to almost repeat this success in 1987 with the album Bête Noire (UK number 9) and the single The Right Stuff . He declined the offer to sing the song Don't You (Forget About Me) , later known by Simple Minds . After an extensive tour in 1988/89, Ferry disappeared from the public for five years. It was not until the spring of 1993 that he returned with the album Taxi , on which he again offered cover versions of well-known songs such as I Put a Spell on You by Screamin 'Jay Hawkins . The trade press was disappointed. In 1999 he performed songs from the swing era with musicians from the Pasadena Roof Orchestra . For the TV series Babylon Berlin some new titles were recorded.

From 1975 to 1977 Ferry was in a relationship with Jerry Hall . Hall is the cover girl on Roxy Music's Siren album . They met during the recording. The separation from Hall, she left him because of Mick Jagger , he processed in his solo album The Bride Stripped Bare . Bryan Ferry was married to Lucy Helmore from 1982, with whom he has four sons. In 2003 the couple divorced. In 2000, Ferry narrowly escaped an air disaster in Kenya. A man had taken control of the plane, but was still overwhelmed in the dive. During the 2001 tour, Bryan Ferry met the 25-year-old dancer Katie Turner, but separated from her in 2008 because she wanted children, but he didn't. On January 4, 2012, Ferry married the British Amanda Sheppard, with whom he had been together since 2009. Amanda is 36 years younger than him and comes from his sons' circle of friends. The marriage was divorced again in spring 2014.

Bryan Ferry was the face of a fashion campaign for British fashion house Marks & Spencer in 2006 . On June 11, 2011, he was awarded the title of Commander of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II .
