Phil Manzanera (* 31 January 1951 as Philip Geoffrey Targett-Adams in London ) is an English musician ( guitar ) and producer .

Life

Manzanera became known as a guitarist for Roxy Music . After playing in a college band called Pooh And The Ostrich Feather since 1968, the band changed their more psychedelic style towards Canterbury Sound and changed their name to Quiet Sun in 1970 . Manzanera responded to an advertisement in Melody Maker in 1971 asking Roxy Music was looking for a guitarist and was hired in 1972. A short time later, however, he was already doing various solo projects on the side. Parallel to the recordings for his first solo album "Diamond Head" (1975), he called the Quiet Sun, which dissolved in 1972, back together, who then recorded their only album "Mainstream", which was highly acclaimed by critics, together with Brian Eno in the same studio.

Although founding member Brian Eno left the band Roxy Music in a dispute, Manzanera and Eno continued to work together. Manzanera played the guitar on the two albums " Here Come the Warm Jets " and " Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy) " and on some tracks on the album "Before and after Science". They also worked as executive producers on the John Cale album "Fear". Both of them were involved as musicians on this and the following album "Slow Dazzle" and have had a strong influence on the sound of the albums.

In 1976 he founded the short-lived band 801 , which consisted mostly of Roxy Music members, but Eno instead of Bryan Ferry as a member.

In addition to several solo albums, he has also produced several duets with other artists. There were albums with John Wetton , Andy Mackay and Tim Finn . In 1990 he also produced the successful album Senderos de Traición by the Spanish rock band Héroes del Silencio (whose release Entre dos Tierras was a success across Europe) and several albums by former Héroes singer Enrique Bunbury .

Phil Manzanera continues to release albums, such as The Sound of Blue in 2015 . He is also a member of the band around Pink Floyd veteran David Gilmour , z. B. as part of the "On an Island" tour. He co-produced his album On an Island and the 2015 album Rattle That Lock .
