Rattle That Lock (German: "Rüttel am Schloss") is the fourth solo album by British musician David Gilmour , the guitarist and singer of the rock band Pink Floyd . It was released worldwide on September 18, 2015.

background

Even before Pink Floyd's album The Endless River was announced in July 2014, it was leaked that there would be another solo album by David Gilmour. The guest contributions announced by David Crosby and Graham Nash themselves in November 2013 were later temporarily assigned to the Pink Floyd album in the media. Recordings for both albums took place in parallel, the musicians involved and the production team largely overlap. This made it possible to hide the production of The Endless River from the public for a very long time.

The album's title and content were first discussed in detail on June 6, 2015, when David Gilmour and his wife Polly Samson performed at the Borris House Festival of Writing and Ideas in Ireland. Samson compared the underlying theme of the album to the Latin phrase carpe diem . The title of the album should also be understood in this context. At a later date, Samson added that she was inspired by Paradise Lost when writing individual lyrics .

In a video for Rattle That Lock , Gilmour explains how he came up with the melody of the song: When announcements are made at French train stations, a short jingle is played ( SNCF jingle, composed by Michaël Boumendil ), which consists of a small sequence of tones. Gilmour found this sequence of notes so interesting that he recorded it with his iPhone at the train station in Aix-en-Provence and used it as the basis for the piece.

occupation

The voice of Richard Wright can be heard as a sample in the fourth track of the album.

Track list

Gilmour had presented three tracks from the new album at a concert on June 6, 2015 in excerpts to the audience, where he also revealed the title of the album. On July 16, all titles and the cover of the album were announced.
