Polly Samson

Polly Samson (born April 29, 1962 in London ) is a British writer, songwriter and journalist.

Life

Samson's father Lance Samson came to England from Hamburg on a Kindertransport . He became a newspaper journalist and diplomatic correspondent for the Morning Star newspaper . Polly Samson's mother is the Chinese writer Esther Cheo Ying (* 1932). After a difficult childhood, Samson worked in the publishing industry. There she met the writer Heathcote Williams know, with whom she had their first son Charlie. After the birth she was without an apartment and was taken in by the journalist Cassandra Jardine (1954–2012).

After she had separated from Williams, Samson met guitarist and singer David Gilmour of Pink Floyd , which they in 1994 during the tour for Pink Floyd album The Division Bell married. The couple live in West Sussex . Samson's son Charlie was adopted by Gilmour and the couple have three other children together.

She writes short stories for BBC Radio 4 and has published a compilation of these stories under the title Lying in Bed (Virago 1999). Samson has also published Out of the Picture (Virago 2000), Gas and Air (Bloomsbury 2003), Girls Night In (Harper Collins 2000), A Day in the Life (Black Swan 2003), and a contribution to Just When Stories (Beautiful Books 2010).

She wrote lyrics for the Pink Floyd albums The Division Bell and The Endless River (2014), as well as for the Gilmour albums On an Island (2006) and Rattle That Lock (2015).
