David Crosby
David Crosby (born August 14, 1941 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American guitarist , singer and songwriter . He was a founding member of the Byrds and of Crosby, Stills and Nash (and Young) .
life and career
David Crosby was born to Aliph Van Cortland Whitehead and Floyd Crosby . He was a spoiled and rebellious youth and was expelled from several schools. He also came into conflict with the law early on. In 1960 his parents divorced. It was around this time that he discovered folk music , which finally gave him the opportunity to realize himself.
Crosby is one of the founding members of the Byrds with Roger McGuinn and Gene Clark . From 1964 to 1967 he recorded five albums with them and developed into a demanding songwriter in the group. After arguments, he was released and soon founded the supergroup Crosby, Stills & Nash with Stephen Stills of Buffalo Springfield and Graham Nash of the Hollies . The debut album and the follow-up Déjà Vu , in which Neil Young completed the band, were great hits and established CSN & Y as one of the most successful American formations of the 60s and 70s (including an appearance at the Woodstock Festival ). To date, Crosby, Stills and Nash (some with Neil Young) have recorded over ten LPs and occasionally tour together. Crosby wrote for the group u. a. "Guinnevere", "Almost Cut My Hair", "Long Time Gone", "Déjà Vu" and "Delta" as well as the music for the classic "Wooden Ships".
After the CSNY double live album 4 Way Street (1971), all four members concentrated on solo projects, and Crosby released his first solo record If I Could Only Remember My Name ... , on which Young and Nash also musicians from the Grateful Dead , Jefferson Airplane and Santana contributed. Between 1972 and 1977 Crosby regularly recorded albums with Graham Nash as a duo (another Crosby Nash album was not released until 2004) and has released other solo albums since the late 80s.
In the 1980s, Crosby's career increasingly stalled due to his massive drug problems. Although Stills and Nash brought him back to the studio in 1982 to record the album Daylight Again , Crosby's involvement was largely limited by drug-related vocal problems. The low point came in 1985: he spent almost a year in prison for a drug offense in 1985/86 and was not released until his appeal was overturned. After a successful withdrawal, Crosby went back to the studio with Stills, Nash and Young to record the album American Dream . Young, who had long since fallen out with the other three, had promised Crosby that he would record new material with him and the others if the withdrawal was successful. The album was largely acclaimed by critics and audiences. Inspired by this, Crosby's first solo album in 18 years was finally released in 1989: Oh Yes, I Can .
In the same year he also worked for the first time with Phil Collins and contributed some vocal parts to his album ... But Seriously , including the corresponding, successful single Another Day in Paradise (song) . Crosby also appeared in the music video for Collins' global hit That's Just The Way It Is . In 1993 the two continued their collaboration: For Crosby's album Thousand Roads they wrote the song Hero , which Collins also produced. The single reached number 44 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, making it the second most successful single in Crosby's solo career (only Immigration Man , released in 1972 as a duo with Graham Nash, was more successful and came in at number 36).
Crosby also appeared several times as an actor. The best-known of his four film roles is probably that of Tickles in Hook (1991). He played slightly larger roles as a guest actor in several TV series, for example as Duke in Roseanne or as the initially dry alcoholic Chester on night shift with John , who relapses on his fifth and last appearance in the series and dies under the influence of alcohol in a car accident . With the role he played in 1993 and 1994, he also alluded to his own addiction problems. A liver transplant was required in November 1994, which saved Crosby's life after many years of excessive drug use.
David Crosby has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice : as a member of the Byrds (1991) and of Crosby, Stills & Nash (1997). In 2009 he was also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame .
On March 7, 2004, a few hours after an acclaimed live concert, Crosby was arrested for gun and marijuana possession in a Times Square hotel and charged the same day. He was fined only $ 5,000 in early July 2004 for pleading guilty to illegally possessing weapons. Crosby is the biological father of Melissa Etheridge and Julie Cypher's two children through a sperm donation .
