Melissa Lou Etheridge (born May 29, 1961 in Leavenworth , Kansas ) is an American singer-songwriter and rock musician . She was awarded an Oscar and two Grammys .

Life

Melissa Etheridge was born in 1961 in Kansas to a computer specialist and math teacher . She has been playing guitar and writing songs since she was eight and made her first appearance in front of an audience at the age of 13.

In 1987 Melissa Etheridge signed her first recording deal with Island Records after label founder Chris Blackwell discovered her in a small club in Long Beach , California . In 1988 her first album, Melissa Etheridge , was released, for whose sales she received multiple platinum: "one of the most amazing debut albums of the 80s" ( All Music Guide ). She also succeeded with the albums Yes I Am (1994) and Your Little Secret (1996); She also received platinum for two further albums and gold for another .

Melissa Etheridge is an openly lesbian , which she publicly admitted at the 1993 Bill Clinton swearing-in ceremony . In 1997 and 1998 she and her long-time friend Julie Cypher became the mother of two children whom Cypher carried through sperm donation from David Crosby . The two separated in 2000 and have shared custody ever since. From 2003 to 2010 Etheridge lived with the actress Tammy Lynn Michaels , with whom she also has two children (born October 17, 2006), in a registered partnership . She has been in a relationship with director and producer Linda Wallem since 2011 and has been married since June 2014. Etheridge is a well-known suffragette and LGBT supporter . She has supported the US Democratic Party on several occasions .

In October 2004, Etheridge announced that she had breast cancer . She successfully underwent several operations and chemotherapy, and announced in the spring of 2005 that she had survived the disease. In February 2005, she performed at the Grammy Awards, where she duet with Joss Stone as a tribute to Janis Joplin whose title Piece of My Heart sang. In 2007 she processed her cancer in the song Message to Myself .

In 2006 she worked on the music for the film Bear Brothers 2 . She wrote and sang the songs It Will Be Me and Welcome to this Day . She also sang Feels Like Home , a duet with Josh Kelley . Etheridge's album The Awakening was released in 2007, and Fearless Love followed in 2010 . In February 2011 she took on the role of St. Jimmy in the rock musical American Idiot on Broadway. In 2018 she was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.

Awards

She won two Grammy Awards for her songs Ain't It Heavy (1992) and Come to My Window (1994), which is her best-known song alongside Like the Way I Do and Bring Me Some Water .

In 2007 she was nominated for a Grammy for I Need to Wake Up , which she wrote for the Al Gore film An Inconvenient Truth , and won an Oscar for Best Song . In September 2011 she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the music recording category .
