I Need to Wake Up is a song by Melissa Etheridge from the documentary An Inconvenient Truth . The song won the Oscar for best movie song at the 2007 Academy Awards .

The song was first released as the 18th track on Etheridge's album Greatest Hits: The Road Less Traveled in October 2005. In 2006 it was released as a single on Island Records .

I Need to Wake Up can be heard above the credits of An Inconvenient Truth .

Melissa Etheridge had just got over breast cancer with chemotherapy when Al Gore asked her to write a song for his documentary.

  • Oscar for the best movie song. It was one of two Academy Awards for the film, which was also named best full-length documentary. I Have to Wake Up prevailed against the other nominated songs Listen , Patience and Love You I Do from the film Dreamgirls and Our Town from Cars .

Nominations

  • The song was nominated for the 49th Grammy Awards in the Song Written for Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media category. But had to admit defeat Our Town by Randy Newman from the movie Cars .
  • At the 12th Critics Choice Movie Award , I Have to Wake Up was nominated in the song category . Ultimately, however, lists from Dreamgirls prevailed here.
  • At the Gold Derby Award , I have to Wake Up was nominated for Best Original Song, the award was given to lists from Dreamgirls .
  • I Have to Wake Up was also nominated for Best Original Song at the 11th OFTA (2006) . The OFTA Award went to lists .
  • The song was nominated for the 2007 World Soundtrack Award in the category Best Original Song Written for Film , but you Know My Name from James Bond 007: Casino Royale had to admit defeat.
