Summary
As best film of the year was able to Martin Scorsese's gangster film The Departed - Under enemies prevail. The production of Warner Bros. , an American remake of the Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs , became the most successful film with four trophies and also won prizes in the categories of director, adapted screenplay and editing. Just behind with three awards is Guillermo del Toro's fantasy film Pan's Labyrinth . Bill Condon's musical adaptation Dreamgirls , the documentary An Inconvenient Truth and the independent comedy Little Miss Sunshine each received two awards . The German contribution The Lives of Others by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck prevailed as the best foreign language film and underpinned the international importance of German film with the second Oscar in this category for a German production within five years. The co-favorite film Babel by Alejandro González Iñárritu fell short of expectations. The modern parable on the biblical tower, which had previously received the Golden Globe Award for the best film drama , only received the prize for the best film music.
The favored British Helen Mirren (best leading actress for her portrait of Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen ) and the American Forest Whitaker (best leading actor for the part of Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland - In the Fangs of the Power ) and Jennifer Hudson (Best Supporting Actress for Dreamgirls ). All three mimes had previously been honored with the Golden Globe Award and numerous other prizes. Favorite Eddie Murphy (Dreamgirls) lost the Academy Award to Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine) in the 'Best Supporting Actor' category . The Irishman Peter O'Toole - nominated for the eighth time - was able to not win a regular performer prize after a honorary Oscar of 2003.
Even before the award ceremony, the Italian composer Ennio Morricone , the former actress and film producer Sherry Lansing and the software developer Ray Feeney were the winners . Morricone has composed the film scores for more than 300 films over the course of his 45-year career. Morricone had been nominated for an Oscar five times: In the Embers of the South (1978), The Mission (1986), The Untouchables (1987), Bugsy (1991) and The Magic of Malèna (2000).
Above all, Lansing is being honored for her longstanding commitment in her role as President of Paramount Film Studios in the fight against cancer. She is awarded the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award .
Feeney, five-time Oscar winner for scientific and technical developments, receives the Gordon E. Sawyer Award for his groundbreaking developments in digital visual effects .
Moderation
As in previous years, there was another change in the moderation. After Chris Rock (2005) and Jon Stewart (2006) had led through the awards ceremony in previous years , US comedian and actress Ellen DeGeneres led through the evening in 2007 . After Whoopi Goldberg, she was only the second woman to host the ceremony.
Quote
“This is the most international Academy Awards ever. I think I saw a few Americans anyway. I am talking about the space fillers. [...] Please keep your speeches short! Not that we don't have time for long speeches, we just don't have time for boring ones. So if you don't have anything interesting to say, come up with something! Say you 're from the Bronx or that you grew up in a car, people love that. [...] Peter O'Toole is nominated for the eighth time today. As the saying goes: 'All good things come in threes!' [...] I found out there is no way of knowing who will win. Jennifer Hudson was with American Idol , America didn't vote for her, and today she's nominated for an Oscar. And Al Gore - America has voted for him and very complicated ... [...] So many people are here today. I guess: Without Jews, blacks and gays there would be no Oscars. Or nobody called 'Oscar'! "
Live performances
Live performances of all five nominated film songs took place during the award ceremony. The three nominated songs from Dreamgirls were presented in one block, the other two pieces were also presented one after the other.
