John Knoll

John Knoll (* 1962 in Ann Arbor , Michigan ) is a US- American specialist in visual effects and an Oscar winner.

Life

Knoll is the son of college professor Glenn Knoll, from whom he inherited his interest in photography and computers. He is married and has four kids.

Together with his brother Thomas Knoll , at the end of the 1980s he was one of the inventors of the image processing program Photoshop , which was first called Display , or ImagePro for short , and was finally published in 1990 by Adobe Systems as Photoshop . A photo that Knoll took and named Jennifer in Paradise was the first color image to demonstrate the capabilities of Photoshop. It shows Knoll's girlfriend at the time, with whom he is now married, sitting on a beach with his bare back turned to the viewer. Her gaze is directed towards the sea in front of her.

Knoll has been working as a CGI specialist at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) since 1986 . As an employee of ILM, he has worked on numerous films, including Star Wars , Star Trek and Mission: Impossible . He was also the Computer Graphics Project Designer for Abyss - Abyss of Death (1989). For this film, ILM was awarded an Oscar for the best special effects. Knoll himself won the award after three unsuccessful nominations in 2007 for his work on Pirates of the Caribbean - Pirates of the Caribbean 2 (2006).

Knoll was involved in the story development for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016).

Guest appearances

John Knoll had his first guest appearance in the first part of Mission: Impossible as a passenger in the train (tunnel). In Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace he appeared as Lieutenant Rya Kirsch, in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith as a spaceship pilot.
