action

A traitor from the ranks of the CIA is in possession of half of the non-official cover list (abbreviated to NOC list), which contains the aliases of all undercover CIA agents in Eastern Europe. But to read he needs the second half of the list with the real names of the agents. He wants to steal it from the American embassy in Prague . The agents of the special unit IMF (Impossible Missions Force) have the order to document this coup and to arrest the people behind it. But the mission to the agent Ethan Hunt goes wrong. Apparently all agents except Hunt, including the team boss Jim Phelps, are killed.

When Hunt, devastated, contacts CIA officer Kittridge, he learns that the entire operation was only intended to expose a mole within the CIA and that the computer on which the alleged list was stored does not contain any valuable data contained. During the conversation with Kittridge, he learns from Max, an involved arms dealer. He also realizes that suspicion will fall on the sole survivor of the failed operation, i.e. H. on himself. Thereupon he takes flight.

At the meeting point of his former unit, he meets his colleague Claire, who was believed to be dead, at the predetermined time. Hunt sees his chance to get to the mole in contacting the arms dealer Max. Max turns out to be a woman at a meeting. He offers her the real and complete NOC list in exchange for ten million dollars and the name of the traitor. With the possession of the NOC list, Hunt wants to lure the mole out of the background, as it will try to take the list. Together with Claire and the two ex-agents Luther and Krieger, he plans the coup. The real NOC list is well protected on a computer at the CIA headquarters in Langley , Virginia .

Computer expert Luther triggers a fire alarm in the CIA headquarters and enables his colleagues, disguised as firefighters, to enter the building. While Krieger and Hunt approach the highly secured room with the computer through a ventilation shaft, Claire succeeds in pouring emetics into the coffee of the CIA agent working in this room, thus keeping him away from his workplace. After a few complications, Hunt was able to save the list on a MOD data carrier and his team could leave the building unnoticed. But through a careless warrior, CIA officer Kittridge learns of the coup and has Hunt's mother and uncle arrested in order to put him under pressure.

Hunt and his group are hiding in a conspiratorial CIA apartment in London. Krieger argues over the disc with Hunt, supposedly because he wants to be sure not to be betrayed. When the arrest of Hunt's relatives is televised, the latter calls Kittridge in the USA and gives his approximate whereabouts. Immediately afterwards, Hunt meets Jim Phelps, also believed dead, who names Kittridge as a mole. In the course of the conversation, Hunt's suspicion that the mole is Phelps himself is confirmed without informing him of his suspicion.

The list is to be handed over to Max on the TGV high-speed train to Paris, where Max wants to send the data to a safe place immediately via a notebook. While Luther disrupts the attempt to transfer the NOC list, and Kittridge and his men search the train, Hunt, disguised under a Phelps mask, checks whether Claire is making common cause with her husband, Jim Phelps, the mole. Jim Phelps joins them and with the help of a mini camera in glasses Hunt can prove that Phelps is alive and the mole he is looking for. He is upset about it and wants to end the matter. Claire doesn't want Hunt to be killed, however. Phelps then shoots her and flees.

Krieger, who wants to pick up Phelps from the roof of the TGV by helicopter, finally turns out to be a partner of the mole, who was responsible for the death of a team member in Prague. However, Hunt manages to blow up the helicopter with his two opponents in the Channel Tunnel . Max is also arrested. Hunt and Luther are rehabilitated.

background

  • Mission: Impossible had its world premiere in the USA on May 22, 1996. In Germany, the film was released in cinemas on August 8, 1996. On 6 February 1997, he was on video posted on February 7, and ran first time in 1998 on German television on Premiere .
  • The trains in the Eurotunnel are supplied with electricity via overhead lines. When filming the chase scene in the tunnel with the helicopter, however, this was left out. There are also not two tracks in one tube, as shown. In addition, it is not the TGV that runs through the Eurotunnel, but the Eurostar.
  • The character of Jim Phelps was the main character in the two series Cobra Take Over and Mission Impossible (then played by Peter Graves ). Also appears from Cobra you take over Barney Collier (played by Greg Morris ), but only in a supporting role. Both Graves and Morris said in interviews that they were not very enthusiastic about Phelps' transformation into villain.
  • In the sixth part of the (later) film series, the character of the arms dealer “White Widow”, embodied by Vanessa Kirby , makes hints in a speech that her mother is a woman named “Max” who works in the same trade. Since Vanessa Redgrave played the (presumably mentioned) "Max" in the 1996 film adaptation, "Fallout" in a certain sense draws a bow to the first part.
  • For the film, the game development company Infogrames developed the action game of the same name for the film for the Nintendo 64 and PlayStation in 1998 .
