In a Secret Mission (original title Mission: Impossible ) is an American crime series that was produced in 1988 and 1990 by Paramount Television as a new edition and sequel to Kobra, you take over (also Mission: Impossible in the original ). 35 episodes were created, spread over two seasons.
action
Jim Phelps , the secret agent of the Impossible Mission Force (IMF) from the original series, has since retired and works as an instructor for the agency. In the pilot, his former student Tom Copperfield , now the new head of the IMF team, is killed by a professional killer. Due to the death of Copperfield, who was linked by a paternal friendship with Phelps, the latter returns to active service. He puts together a new team from the experts Nicolas Black , Max Harte , Grant Collier and Casey Randall (later Shannon Reed ) and is finally able to fight the assassin. With his new special unit, Phelps takes on further secret special orders all over the world.
production
The idea for the series arose around 1988 at the time of extensive strikes by screenwriters in the American film and television industry. It was planned to shoot the individual episodes as modernized remakes of the old series "Mission: Impossible". In fact, the first four episodes are based on original scripts from the 1960s. When the strikes ended in the meantime and Peter Graves could be signed as Jim Phelps, the previous plans were dropped and people began to produce their own scripts.
Obviously due to budget and production costs, “In a Secret Mission” was filmed entirely in Australia , where all the appropriate locations for the locations around the world were found. For this reason, many well-known Australian and New Zealand actors star in supporting roles, including Marshall Napier , Shane Briant , Bryan Marshall , Henri Szeps , Gerard Kennedy and Peter Curtin . Archive footage was used for the respective locations and views of San Francisco (as the location of the team's base of operations).
Due to low TV ratings, the series was discontinued after the second season. In Germany, “On a secret mission” was initially broadcast on ARD from 1991 onwards, with some episodes being omitted. At the later broadcast dates in the program schedule of the private broadcasters ( ProSieben , Sat. 1 , Kabel1 , ...), “In a secret mission” was then shown in full (except for one episode). In addition, the series opening credits were revised from 1996 due to the successful movie and the series was renamed " Mission Impossible: In a Secret Mission ".
The two seasons (divided into 2 boxes each) were released on DVD in Germany in April and June 2014.

Trivia
- In addition to Peter Graves in a permanent leading role, Greg Morris and Lynda Day George are two other actors from "Kobra, take over" in guest roles.
- Greg Morris , who starred in the original series' Barney Collier , is the father of Phil Morris, who stars as Grant Collier . The father-son relationship was carried over into the series. Morris appears twice, in the episode " Justice for Barney " and the two-parter " The Golden Snake ".
- Terry Markwell dropped out of the series after just twelve episodes. Her character died at the beginning of the episode " Hunger for Power " and was replaced by Jane Badler as Shannon Reed .
- The eighth episode of the second season (" The Fuhrer's Children " ) has not yet been dubbed for German marketing or broadcast on television due to its National Socialist theme (a radical American neo-Nazi politician wants to establish a new terror regime at a European association meeting). Interestingly, with “ Hitler's Legacy ” another episode related to National Socialism (four descendants of former Wehrmacht generals want to create a Fourth Reich with a hidden treasure of gold ) was broadcast on German television.
