action

When Ethan Hunt returns from a delicate mission, he is arrested at the secret London base of the Impossible Mission Force (IMF) by Solomon Lane, head of the mysterious underground organization “Syndicate”, and has to watch him kill an IMF employee in cold blood.

He wakes up in an underground prison where Syndicate members are supposed to torture him. Use the mysterious Ilsa fist in the later stages as MI6 - double agent turns out, he can escape. In the meantime, CIA chief Alan Hunley has made sure that the IMF is closed and its employees are subordinate to him. He does not believe in the existence of the syndicate and suspects Hunt to have committed the terrorist attacks. William Brandt and Benji Dunn are now also under Hunley, and Hunt has to go underground. On his own he chases the syndicate boss.

Six months later, he made contact with Hacker Dunn and directed him to the Vienna State Opera for the performance of the opera Turandot . There they meet Ilsa Faust again and at the last moment prevent an assassination attempt on the Austrian Federal Chancellor . However, he died a little later in a car bomb . Hunt prevents Faust's cover from being blown. You manage to restore confidence in Lane. She lures Ethan and Benji to Morocco , where the three of them jointly steal a top-secret file from an underground server room in a hydropower plant . The plan succeeds, but Ilsa betrays the two and flees with the encrypted USB stick . At the same time, Brandt and Luther Stickell land in Morocco and find the rest of the team. However, Ilsa can shake them all off after a chase.

Ilsa hands the stick to MI6 boss Atlee, who wants to keep her in the game and instructs her to continue her mission. If necessary, she should kill Hunt to prove her loyalty to Solomon. At the meeting, however, Atlee deletes the data on the stick and so Ilsa only gives Solomon an empty stick. Knowing that Ethan's team has made a copy, Solomon has Benji kidnapped and gives Hunt an ultimatum: He should hand over the decrypted stick to Solomon by midnight, then he will spare Benji's life. However, the UK Prime Minister is the only person who can decipher the stick.

In fact, Hunt and his team manage to decrypt the stick with the involuntary help of Hunley. They also convict Atlee of having created the Syndicate. When Lane got out of hand, he tried to cover it up. The stick contains the access data for bank accounts with large amounts of money, which were intended to finance the syndicate.

Hunt memorises the complete account data of the billion dollar stick and then destroys the stick. Everyone involved meets at midnight for a showdown in which Lane is eliminated and arrested.

After the events in London, Hunley convinced Congress to reinstate the IMF. In the end, Hunley becomes the new boss (called secretary) of the IMF.

reception

The film received mostly positive reviews. The film review portal Rotten Tomatoes gives the film 93% positive reviews and it has a Metascore of 75 out of 100 on Metacritic .

Oliver Kaever of Die Zeit praised the film as one of the first films in the series to satisfy both fans and critics. In particular, the British humor , represented by Simon Pegg , is good for the film. Tom Cruise is also in top form and has for the first time left the "cramped and sometimes almost overblown ambition" behind and found his way back to his previous star roles as a sunny boy .

Gabriele Flossmann from the Austrian Kurier also praised the film as a success, even if she thought the cast of the Austrian Chancellor had failed and criticized the unbelievable action scenes. "The chase on the backstage and Schnürboden of the Vienna State Opera" recommended it as "one of the most exciting action scenes in recent film history"

Andreas Borcholte from Spiegel Online also praised the film and particularly highlighted the actress Rebecca Ferguson, who played the double agent Ilsa Faust. Although director Christopher McQuarrie is not a "visual genius [...] like his predecessors Brad Bird and John Woo ", he gives his actors more freedom. The loose style and the humor connected with it benefit the film dramatically and loosen up the "breathless action".
