action

Two years after the arrest of Solomon Lane, the remaining “Syndicate” has formed the terrorist group “The Apostles”, which offers its services for money. They are supposed to purchase weapons- grade plutonium for a stranger known only as John Lark , which he uses to build portable atomic bombs . Ethan Hunt, agent of the Impossible Missions Force (IMF), is assigned to prevent the delivery. The handover of the three plutonium capsules to Hunt's team fails, however, because the survival of his team is more important to Ethan than completing the assignment. So the plutonium comes into the hands of the "apostles". To find out how they should proceed, the team interrogates the nuclear weapons expert Nils Debruuk, who built the portable atomic bombs.

To make sure Hunt doesn't fail a second time, CIA director Erica Sloane has SAD agent August Walker on Hunt's team. Hunt and Walker make a HALO jump over Paris to infiltrate a charity gala run by arms dealer Alanna Mitsopolis, known as the "White Widow". She acts as a mediator between John Lark and the "Apostles". In the men's room they meet the alleged John Lark and a fight breaks out. When Hunt and Walker lose, Ilsa Faust arrives surprisingly. To save Hunt, she shoots Lark, although she originally came to protect Lark from contract killers. Ethan now pretends to be Lark and meets the "White Widow". Together they escape the hit men.

In return for the plutonium, the "apostles" demand the liberation of Solomon Lane. During the attack on the convoy in Paris, Hunt betrayed the men of the "White Widow" to prevent bloodshed. On the run from the police, the "White Widow" and Ilsa Faust, who tries to kill Lane, Hunt brings Lane to safety. Now the "white widow" demands of Hunt to give her both Lane and Faust in London.

In London, however, Secretary Alan Hunley, head of the IMF, confronts Hunt with allegations of being John Lark himself and summons him back. Hunt refuses, apparently drugging Hunley. Walker is supposed to supervise Lane while the rest of the team handles the handover. Now Walker reveals himself to be the real John Lark and Hunley, whose stun was only part of the double game to convict Walker, confronts him with this realization. Based on the evidence, Erica sends Sloane a team to trace Walker and Lane back. However, the team was infiltrated by the "apostles" who liberate Lane. Walker stabs Hunley to death during battle and escapes.

Hunt teams up with Faust again and pursues Lane to Kashmir . Walker wants to detonate the two atomic bombs there in order to contaminate the water supplies of China, India and Pakistan and thus to kill a third of humanity. To prevent detonation, the detonators must be deactivated and both bombs defused within 15 minutes of being activated. At a humanitarian aid camp, Ethan Hunt meets his ex-wife Julia, whom Walker had lured there, and realizes that her life is also in danger.

Lane activates the bombs and hands the detonator to Walker. Hunt pursues him in a helicopter while the rest of the team look for the bombs. Luther finds the first bomb and, with Julia's help, begins to defuse it. Meanwhile, Ilsa Faust and Benji find the second bomb that Lane is guarding. Together they overpower Lane and begin to defuse her. Meanwhile, Hunt becomes involved in a dogfight with Walker. He rams Walker's helicopter and they both crash. There is a duel on an abyss in which Hunt eventually kills Walker. At the last second, Hunt deactivates the detonator while Luther and Benji defuse the bombs.

With the "White Widow" as the middleman, Lane will now be handed over to MI6 alive . Ilsa Faust has thus completed her mission and is no longer in disgrace with the British secret service.

Production history

The actors in the film

In May 2015 it was announced that Paramount Pictures would be working on a sequel to Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation . In November 2015, Christopher McQuarrie announced on Twitter that he would be returning for the sixth installment in the series, both writing and directing the script. In March 2017, Rebecca Ferguson announced her return. In the same month it was also announced that Jeremy Renner will not be returning for the film. Simultaneously it was confirmed that Simon Pegg , Ving Rhames , Alec Baldwin , Sean Harris , Henry Cavill and Vanessa Kirby will star in the film. In May it was revealed that Angela Bassett was cast in the role of CIA director Erica Sloane . McQuarrie announced later in June that Michelle Monaghan would be back in her role as Julia, Hunt's ex-wife. Cavill was in front of the camera for the film Justice League at the same time as the shooting of Mission: Impossible - Fallout . Since he wore a mustache for Fallout , it was subsequently digitally removed for Justice League .

The film was officially named Mission Impossible - Fallout in January 2018 .

Filming

Filming for the film began in Paris on April 10, 2017 , at which point the script was only 33 pages long, so McQuarrie often didn't know how scenes would end. This would have given the production team the chance to work with the cast on the film more freely. On August 13, Cruise broke his right ankle while doing a stunt on the rooftops of London . Several doctors then advised him to take a break for at least nine months so that the fracture could heal completely. After all, at Cruise's request, filming was only interrupted for seven weeks. The break resulted in costs of around 80 million US dollars, which, however, were borne by the insurance company and therefore did not fall into the budget. The shot of Cruise injuring himself was used for the film. The production team also used the break in filming to decide on an approximate direction for the film, which had not happened beforehand due to the tight script. The chase scenes in Paris were all filmed after the seven-week break, which is why Cruise had to complete them with his still broken ankle. Filming locations in Paris included the Trocadéro Esplanade near the Eiffel Tower , the Grand Palais and the Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile , which was closed to traffic for 90 minutes. The boat scenes were filmed on the Canal Saint-Martin .

The locations in London included Shoreditch and Bishopsgate , which were used as backdrops for other European cities, including Berlin , as well as St Paul's Cathedral and Blackfriars Bridge . A scaffolding structure was added to the 99-meter-high tower of the Tate Gallery of Modern Art for six days to make shooting easier for the film crew. The actual filming on this lasted only six hours, whereby special permits had to be obtained beforehand, including from the Civil Aviation Authority and the Metropolitan Police Service . Overall, the preparations for this scene took over a year.

The Pulpit Rock

The HALO jump was filmed in the United Arab Emirates near Abu Dhabi . It took more than a year to prepare for the scene, and Cruise became the first actor in film history to direct such a jump himself. In total, Cruise jumped out of a Boeing C-17 106 times to get the three shots for the film. The helmets presented particular difficulties. They wanted to avoid that Cruise's face is covered by glasses. In addition, no lamps could be placed inside the helmet, as only one spark would have been enough to set Cruise's head on fire due to the oxygen mask. As a solution, special helmets were developed especially for these sequences, which had not been available on the market before. In addition, Cruise and McQuarrie insisted on shooting the scenes at dusk, which is why they only had a time interval of three minutes a day. A professional parachutist acted as cameraman for these recordings, who first had to learn to jump backwards while keeping an eye on Cruise and at the same time keeping the right distance from him.

In November 2017, the film was shot for three days in Norway at Pulpit Rock , which is why access to the tourist destination was restricted to cast and crew. The municipality also allowed the production team to land up to 50 helicopters in the area.

Since Cruise was determined to take the helicopter shots of the final fight himself without the presence of other people, he had to complete a helicopter license. This usually takes three months, during which one would have to do eight hours of training per day. Cruise decided, however, to train a total of 16 hours per day with two different teams, which meant that he received his flight license after just six weeks and could start filming in New Zealand . There they shot in a triangle between Milford Sound , Queenstown and Lake Wanaka for 25 days in winter. As a result, there were no climbers and only a few hikers in the area, which made filming easier for the team. Cruise himself carried out flight maneuvers for the filming, which the director would not have required even from experienced pilots because of the high risk involved. A security helicopter flew with him at all times for his protection.

Further recordings took place at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden near London . Filming ended on February 22, 2018.

publication

The first trailer was released during the Super Bowl halftime break on February 4, 2018. A second trailer followed on May 15, 2018.

The film premiered on July 12, 2018 in Paris. It was released in US cinemas on July 27 and in German cinemas on August 2, 2018, where it was screened in RealD , IMAX and IMAX 3D. On August 2nd, there was also a special screening on the Pulpit Rock in Norway, one of the film locations. More than 2000 visitors climbed the rock platform 604 meters above the Lysefjord on a four-hour hike , on which a video screen was set up.

synchronization

The synchronization of the film was done by Berliner Synchron GmbH . Tobias Neumann wrote the dialogue book, Clemens Frohmann was responsible for the dialogue direction .

Reviews

The film has so far won over 97 percent of the critics on Rotten Tomatoes and received a Metascore of 86 out of 100 possible points on Metacritic .

After the premiere in Paris on July 12, 2018, critics published initial assessments of the film. Steven Weintraub from Collider writes of a fantastic, action-packed film. Sean O'Connell from CinemaBlend criticizes the somewhat too frequent double games, but recommends the film to all lovers of action films.

Daniel Krüger from Musikexpress describes leading actor Tom Cruise as crazy. He and Christopher McQuarrie wouldn't just bring back the classic, hand-made action blockbuster. They would also have perfected it, which would hardly have been possible without Cruise's megalomania. Krüger goes on to explain that the film series has long ceased to be about “[subtle] tension or castling in the world of espionage”, but rather about the action around which the plot is constructed. The intrigues are confused and are discharged in surprising dialogues that are more humorous than meaningful. In conclusion, Krüger draws that Cruise has made Ethan Hunt a superhero without superpowers over the course of the six films, but who also has to learn how to fail on a small scale.

Holger Kreitling from Die Welt calls Cruise the only true action hero. He moves ceaselessly and at breakneck speed and carries his films with ease. Mission: Impossible - Fallout is a breathless film at the height of its art, in which the action scenes are of course brilliant. Cruise, who dares to do everything and always wants more, seems as if he can reject any limitation of his performance. In summary, Kreitling says that McQuarrie did a great job of staging the film, giving Cruise's role space to unfold and at the same time maintaining control in the midst of excess, which is one of the most important parts of action cinema.

Tobias Kniebe from the Süddeutsche Zeitung is a little more critical of the action mania. Since you would have seen everything you get to see in Mission: Impossible - Fallout , this leads to Cruise exposing himself to more and more real dangers during filming in order to entertain the moviegoers. The resulting action scenes in the film cannot always be explained in a comprehensible way, but are still a factor that makes the film series a cinematographic frenzy.

The film service awarded the film four out of five possible stars and praised it as an exciting spy thriller in which familiar motifs from previous films were varied in an original way.

Gross profit

In Germany as well as in North America, Mission: Impossible - Fallout was at the top of the box office on its opening weekend. In the US, the film played in the first days of 61.5 million US dollars one, setting a revenue-record for his franchise. Global revenues amounted to 791.11 million US dollars, which he the most financially successful of the film series and the eight most successful film of the year 2018 and to 88 (as of: August 8, 2020) ranked the most financially successful films of all time is . In Germany, the film has so far recorded 1,285,778 visitors and grossed 13.80 million euros, which puts it in 20th place in the 2018 annual charts.
