Moviepilot is a German-speaking film recommendation community based on the principle of collaborative filtering and recommending other films that suit their taste to users based on their ratings of cinema and television films .

functionality

To calculate the film recommendations, Moviepilot has developed an algorithm together with the Humboldt University of Berlin , which compares the film ratings of all users with one another and checks them for taste matches. As soon as a user has rated some films on a scale from 0 to 10, films are recommended to them that they are likely to like as well. These film tips are films that a user has not yet seen or rated, but which have been rated positively by other users with a similar taste in films and therefore classified as recommendable. Similar to Last.fm in the field of music , Moviepilot is a recommendation service that works on the basis of social software , provides personalized recommendations and also allows you to compare your own tastes with those of other users.

In addition to numerous film fans, some well-known actors , film directors and film critics are also users of Moviepilot. The most prominent users of Moviepilot include the actors Til Schweiger , Heike Makatsch , Ralf Richter and Robert Stadlober as well as the film directors Marco Kreuzpaintner and Uwe Boll .

In addition to the recommendation service and film reviews, the film portal offers a customizable cinema, DVD and television program and displays a wide range of media coverage for current films. Moviepilot has its own film news editorial team and offers access to film trailers and film reviews .

history

Moviepilot was founded at the end of 2006 as a cooperation between the film distribution and film production company jetfilm GmbH and the software company Das Büro am Draht GmbH . In February 2007, the website went into operation as part of the Berlinale . Business angels such as Stefan Glänzer ( Last.fm ), Riccardo Zacconi (king.com) and Kai Bolik (GameDuell) support the company.

On August 31, 2007, T-Online implemented Moviepilot along with four other Web 2.0 services in its portal. This was the first major cooperation of this kind for Moviepilot. Until 2011, Moviepilot was to be found in the entertainment area of the T-Online portal under the name Meine Filmwelt .

In addition, Moviepilot has had its own channel on the YouTube video platform since September 5, 2007. Information and entertainment videos about the work of some editors are published here at irregular intervals. So were z. B. visited the Pixar Animation Studios in San Francisco as part of the new movie ToyStory 3 .

Since 2008 Moviepilot has acted as a cooperation partner of the Association of German Film Critics in the awarding of the German Film Critics' Prize .

In autumn 2012, moviepilot announced the launch of its English-language website moviepilot.com , which will primarily focus on upcoming film projects.

On June 25, 2014 Moviepilot.de was sold to the French media company Webedia for 15 million euros . The English-language branch moviepilot.com was not affected by the sale and will continue to exist as an independent company.

Gamespilot.de was launched on October 30th, dedicated to video games and, similar to Moviepilot, recommended other games based on the ratings submitted by users. The website was merged with GamePro.de at the end of November 2016 .

Web presence

Monthly Moviepilot is more than 10 million visits . This makes moviepilot the largest film portal in Germany. The portal includes over 22 million film reviews, 600,000 short reviews and information on 75,000 films.

In addition to its web presence, moviepilot.de also unites a community of two million fans on Facebook .

Three channels are also operated on YouTube . The current trailers are uploaded in the respective area on the Moviepilot Trailer (over 800,000 subscribers) and Series Trailer MP (over 350,000 subscribers) channels . The Moviepilot channel (over 250,000 subscribers) mainly deals with the topics of film and television in the form of factual videos, trailer analyzes and toplists. From 2012 to 2016, the web video producers Oliver Lysiak and Manniac ran the successful "SCREEN!" and "flood of facts" on the channel. On November 12, 2016, however, the two left Moviepilot and have since run their own channel called FLIPPS . The channel was subsequently restructured and the SCREEN! and flood of facts were discontinued. The web video producer Tommaso Crogliano, who previously posted the gaming news on SCREEN! moderated and was generally responsible for the work behind the camera, directed the channel until August 2017. Since then, the channel has been led by Yves Arievich.
