Uwe Boll (born June 22, 1965 in Wermelskirchen ) is a German former film director , producer and screenwriter .

Life

Uwe Boll was already producing short films on Super 8 and video in his youth . He first attended the film schools in Munich and Vienna in the field of film directing and then studied business administration and literature in Cologne and Siegen . In Siegen he received his doctorate in literature in 1994 with the work The genre series and its genres for a doctorate in philosophy . His first directorial work included the films German Fried Movie and Barschel - Mord in Geneva? , Boll wrote a book with the title German fried movie & Barschel-Mord in Geneva or how to make films in Germany .

In 1991 he founded the company BOLU Filmproduktions- und Verleih GmbH together with his friend and business partner Frank Lustig. Since 1998 he has been the sole owner and managing director of the company. From 1994 to 2000 he was also a producer and director at Taunusfilm and managing director of TaunusFilm International in Wiesbaden.

Uwe Boll has been a professional director and producer since 1991. In addition to productions of commercials for E-Plus, Lucky Strike, Porsche and Pall Mall, he makes movies, since 2000 he has mostly directed them himself and also takes on the production. His films were financed between 2000 and 2007 through his own investment funds . Boll's films are often shot in Vancouver (Canada) for financial reasons , but also in South Africa, Croatia, Bulgaria and Romania.

Since 2005 Uwe Boll has also been active in worldwide film sales. To this end, he founded Boll AG in Germany and floated it on the stock exchange in the summer of 2006. Event Film Distribution Inc. was founded in Canada. In addition to the worldwide film rights for his own films, Uwe Boll also markets films produced by third parties, such as One Way with Til Schweiger or the Russian hit movie VIY. In 2009 Uwe Boll withdrew from Germany. Since 2011 he has been producing his films through his Canadian company. Boll AG is in liquidation .

In autumn 2010 the film biography Max Schmeling - A German Legend came into the cinemas. Former German light heavyweight world champion Henry Maske played the title role . The production went back to an initiative of two Hamburg millionaires who remained anonymous and wanted to set a monument for Schmeling with the film. The film, which was unanimously torn by critics, was also a commercial failure, but was then sold worldwide and was shown in the USA on numerous television channels such as SHOWTIME .

Uwe Boll can occasionally also be seen as an actor in his films, for example in cameo appearances not mentioned in the credits in Seed , The Final Storm and Barschel - Mord in Geneva? In his film Postal , Boll appears as a film producer who wears leather pants and announces that he will finance his films with Nazi gold ; and in his Holocaust film Auschwitz he can be seen as an SS man leaning against the door of a gas chamber while people inside struggle with death. In Blubberella he can be seen as Adolf Hitler .

Boll also regularly passes on his knowledge in seminars, e.g. B. at the Munich film workshop .

As part of the “Sneak Previews”, Uwe Boll presented his film Rampage 3 in UCI cinemas across Germany in August 2016 and discussed his film with cinema-goers. He explained that Rampage 3 should be his last self-produced film. Due to the decline in sales of DVDs and Blu-rays, Uwe Boll no longer sees the possibility of adequately financing his film projects. In the future, he wants to concentrate more on film distribution and his restaurant in Vancouver.

Boll's own streaming service BOLLFLIX - the name based on Netflix - started at the end of August 2016, but has not been available since the beginning of 2019 at the latest.

In August 2017 his autobiography was published with the title “You can do me!”. In 2018 he announced that he would not make any more films for the time being.

Political commitment

For the 2017 federal election , Uwe Boll was featured in the election commercial of the Rhineland-Palatinate state association of the party Die PARTTEI . Since summer 2019 he has been the spokesman for the federal executive committee of the party Das Haus Deutschland .

Personal

Uwe Boll is married to the Canadian television producer Natalia Tudge (* 1981) and has two children. He lives alternately in Vancouver ( Canada ) and Mainz .

Restaurant operator

In the winter of 2014/2015, Boll opened the Bauhaus restaurant in Gastown , Vancouver , where he offers German cuisine. It received good reviews for the gourmet restaurant and made it to 37th place in a ranking of the best restaurants in the country and made it into the top 50 of the world's best restaurants. After Boll founded the Bauhaus Group with his wife in spring 2018, he opened The Blenheim in Dunbar Southland , Vancouver, a second Bauhaus restaurant in Toronto and plans to open a third in China in the course of 2019 .

financing

Uwe Boll financed his films between Sanctimony - Auf mordenischem Kurs (2000) and Far Cry (2008) almost exclusively through German media funds . To this end, BOLU Filmproduktions- und Verleih GmbH offered holdings in a total of ten limited partnerships between 1999 and 2005 .

Because of this business model, Uwe Boll - like numerous other film production companies in Germany and abroad - was accused of burdening German taxpayers by exploiting this tax loophole. These allegations are not only due to the mostly moderate theatrical successes of films financed in this way, but also to the fact that a large part of the available budget was used up at locations abroad and not in Germany. Since 2007 he has financed his films through his film world distribution, pre-sales, subsidies and provisions.

reception

Boll is described by some critics as one of the “worst directors”, either “of all time” or “in the world”. In the spring of 2006, a British cinema magazine titled a portrait of the director with "Son of Ed Wood ". The Golden Raspberry Award Foundation 2009 took up the comparison with Wood, which is known as the “worst director of all time” , by calling Boll Germany's answer to Ed Wood .

In late summer 2006, Boll invited five of his greatest critics (Richard Kyanka, Jeff Sneider, Chris Alexander, Carlos Palencia Jimenez-Arguello, and Nelson "Chance" Minter) to Vancouver for a boxing match against him. Boll justified the action: "If they want to finish me off, they should try it!" Boll won all five fights, but had boxing experience before.

Stop boll petition

In April 2008, computer game tester Robert Harvey published a petition on petitiononline.com with the title “Stop Dr. Uwe Boll ”, which Boll calls on to stop all activities in the film business. He criticized Boll for having his films "ruined the future opportunities for anyone who would try to bring video games to film." Boll himself commented on the critical petition in an interview with the horror film fansite FEARnet : “Yes, I know about it. 18,000 votes are not enough to convince me. ”When asked how many signatures would be necessary to convince him, Boll replied:“ One million. Now we have a new goal ”. After this announcement Bolls increased the number of supporters by more than 100,000 within a few days, Boll responded to the media response to the petition in a video message in which he described himself as the only genius in the film business, criticized other directors such as Michael Bay , Eli Roth and George Clooney and asked his fans to draw up a pro-boll petition. The original petition received over 250,000 signatures in May 2008. The chewing gum brand Stride from Cadbury Schweppes supported the anti-boll petition and offered each participant a gift certificate if the petition exceeded the limit of one million signatures by May 14, 2008. However, the petition ultimately only got around 300,000 signatures.

Awards

For the negative Golden Raspberry Award , Boll was nominated for “Worst Director” for his film BloodRayne in 2005 and for Alone in the Dark in 2006, but neither did he receive the award. In 2009 Boll won the Golden Raspberry as “Worst Director” for his films Postal , 1968 Tunnel Rats and Swords of the King - Dungeon Siege , and Swords of the King was also nominated for “Worst Film”. In addition, Boll received the Golden Raspberry for the category “Worst Career Achievement”. This prize had not previously been awarded since 1987. Boll responded promptly with a video on YouTube in which he berated the Razzie society.

In September 2010, Uwe Boll and Darfur won the award for the best international film at the New York International Independent Film & Video Festival .
