Alone in the Dark II

Alone in the Dark is the film adaptation of the computer game of the same name , but is based on the fourth part of the series. The director is Uwe Boll based on the script by Elan Mastai, Michael Roesch and Peter Scheerer , with Christian Slater and Tara Reid playing the leading roles .

action

Private detective Edward Carnby travels around the world in search of supernatural phenomena and mysterious artifacts from lost civilizations. On the mysterious Shadow Island he finds the remains of the ancient high culture of the Abkani. He brings one of the artifacts to his ex-girlfriend Aline Cedrac in the USA, where she works as a curator in a museum. While she is beginning the analysis, a bloodthirsty monster appears in the museum and kills several employees.

Now Commander Richard Burke, head of operations of Special Unit 713 , a secret organization for paranormal phenomena and Carnby's former boss, joins the investigation. The two soon get into an argument with each other, but then have to watch as more monsters appear and more and more people turn into mindless zombies . Eventually they get together and try to destroy the portal created by the artifact, which leads into the alien dimension where the horror creatures are at home. Not only does Cedrac's boss, Professor Lionel Hudgens, appear to be working against them, but also a mysterious power that Carnby encountered in his childhood.

Through an underground corridor you get under the orphanage in which Carnby used to live and which now houses the zombie nest. Upon entering an old hospital room, it becomes clear that Special Unit 713 planted worms in the orphans to turn them into zombies. After the three have placed a bomb in the zombies' nest, they try to escape and detonate the bomb using a remote detonator. However, since the bomb cannot receive the ignition signal, Burke runs back and activates it by hand. The other two reluctantly flee, and the detonation kills any monsters that have passed through the gate. Burke's fate is uncertain.

backgrounds

The film is a continuation of the fourth part of the video game series ( Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare ), but contains plot elements that contradict the plot of the video games. This led to discussions in fan circles as to whether the film belongs to the canon of the series.

reception

The film was panned by most critics and named by many as the worst film of 2005; some even went so far as to call it the worst movie of all time. Nevertheless, the film was a financial success, which is why a second part was produced ( Alone in the Dark II , 2008).

Soundtrack

The metal part of the film music, which dominates the film, is more noticeable than the rather inconspicuous symphonic score part . The German band Solution Coma contributed the title song. The song Wish I Had An Angel by the Finnish band Nightwish was also featured on the soundtrack . In addition to these bands, well-known bands such as Dimmu Borgir , In Flames , Lacuna Coil , Cradle of Filth , Apocalyptica , Napalm Death , Agathodaimon and others contributed a song to the soundtrack.

Executive soundtrack producer was Wolfgang Herold , who worked with Uwe Boll in later productions ( Swords of the King - Dungeon Siege and Far Cry ).

Awards

In 2006, Tara Reid was nominated as worst actress and Uwe Boll as worst director for the anti-film award Golden Raspberry .

continuation

On September 25, 2008, Alone in the Dark II was released as a rental version in video stores. Uwe Boll only acted as a producer here. Directed by Michael Roesch and Peter Scheerer, who also wrote the script. The successor was produced as a direct-to-DVD film for Lionsgate Home Entertainment and Vivendi Visual Entertainment. The commercial version was released on November 28, 2008 on Video DVD and Blu-ray Disc. Actors are Rick Yune, Dee Wallace, Jason Connery, Lance Henriksen and Ralf Moeller .

Reviews

  • The lexicon of international films wrote: “The confused plot serves only as a pretext to revive the crude aesthetics of the horror and splatter films of the 1980s. One-dimensional characters, primitive shock effects and unconnected genre motifs are pure " camp " and only accessible to the initiated. "
  • Cinema : "Despite some nicely staged action sequences, the wooden platitudes of the stereotypical characters and the self-indulgent indulgence in pyro effects prevent (...) something like tension."
