Christian Michael Leonard Slater (born August 18, 1969 in New York City ) is an American actor and television producer .

Life

biography

Christian Slater was born in New York City on August 18, 1969 to actor Michael Hawkins and casting agent Mary Jo Slater ; the family is of Irish-English descent. In 1976, at the age of seven, he had his first television appearance in the US television soap The Edge of Night . In the early 1980s he appeared regularly as a stage actor on Broadway shows. In the action film The Legend of Billie 1985 Slater played his first film role. Two years later, he moved to Los Angeles and settled on film acting. His breakthrough is the 1986 film The Name of the Rose, starring Sean Connery . His career peaked in the mid-1990s. Slater played leading roles in the television series My Own Worst Enemy (2008), The Forgotten (2009-2010), Breaking In (2011-2012) and Mind Games (2014), all of which were discontinued after the first season. Since 2015 Slater has played the eponymous role of the cable series Mr. Robot , which has been extended by three seasons and has received critical acclaim.

In 2000 Christian Slater and Ryan Haddon married. They have two children together (born in 1999 and 2001). In 2005, the couple announced their separation. His half-brother Ryan Slater is also an actor.

Conflicts with the law

In 1989, Slater was arrested for a drunk driving. He was sentenced to 10 days in prison. In 1994 he was arrested for trying to take a gun with him on a scheduled flight. He was sentenced to community service.

In 1997 he allegedly attacked his then girlfriend Michelle Jonas while under the influence of alcohol and other drugs . He was in rehab for over 100 days. He was then sentenced to three months in prison and three months in rehab. In May 2005, Slater was arrested in Manhattan for allegedly molesting a passerby on the street. In September of that year, the proceedings were discontinued subject to conditions.
