occupation

Mindhunters (alternative title: Every Second Counts - Mindhunters ) is a psychological thriller by Renny Harlin from 2004. It is thematically similar to the novel And then there was none by Agatha Christie.

action

The FBI -Agenten JD Reston and Sara Moore observe a ruined house in the woods. When they hear a scream, they break into the house and find two dead girls in the basement. The alleged perpetrator also sits dead next to them. When Sara describes the situation as "under control", she is stabbed by another perpetrator and used as protection from her colleague. Reston manages to eliminate the perpetrator, but is mortally wounded himself.

Then the scene is cleared up and the audience learns that the whole action was just an exercise. The two FBI agents are part of a team whose members are trained to be profilers . Instructor Harris criticizes Reston and Sara for failing miserably at the exercise, but they get another chance: along with colleagues Bobby Whitman, Vince Sherman, Rafe Perry, Lucas Harper, and Nicole Willis from the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia ) they are brought to the uninhabited Oniega Island, a base of the US Navy Seals .

They are supposed to complete their final exams there - absolutely flawlessly. They are observed by the short-term appointed detective Gabe Jensen from the homicide squad in Philadelphia as well as numerous cameras that are spread across the island. In their practice, they must hunt down a serial killer who goes under the code name The Puppeteer . You should catch the perpetrator as quickly as possible without using guns.

So you go looking for clues together and quickly find what you are looking for. A clock that is set to 10 o'clock is attached to a dead cat. In another shop they find a massacred doll's body. When it is actually 10 o'clock, there is a dramatic incident. A radio triggers a chain reaction that causes a helium bottle to fall over and open. The escaping gas freezes Reston within a few seconds. After this shock, they are suddenly unsure whether it is really just an exercise or a real murder case.

The matter becomes even more explosive when the agents realize that they are isolated on the island. There is no radio contact and the only available boat exploded just before they tried to enter. So it is clear: the murderer must be one of them. The remaining profilers suspect Gabe Jensen, who is considered an outsider in the group, as he was assigned to their examination without any warning.

When they find another clock set to 12 o'clock, they think they see a pattern. One of them should die at the specified time. But at lunchtime at first nothing seems to happen, but after drinking their coffee, they are all unconscious . Bobby, who comes to first, ties up the suspect detective. But then they discover the second body, it's Rafe. His entire head was cut off and put back on his neck, but he was bled completely. The perpetrator wrote strange rows of numbers on a wall with the blood.

Little by little, all agents are killed except for Lucas, Gabe and Sara. The three split up, pointing out that the murderer is the last one standing. During the subsequent argument, Gabe shoots Lucas down and hits Sara against a table until she is passed out. When Lucas, wearing a bulletproof vest, appears again, there is another fight with Gabe, in the course of which they both fall on a staircase and remain unconscious. Gabe is the first to wake up, but is knocked down with a fire extinguisher by Sara, who is now conscious again. Sara takes care of Lucas and explains to him that she can now prove that Gabe is the real killer: After Vince's death, she reset the clock in the main room, but dusted the hands with a fluorescent powder. When the killer had put the clock back on (to stay on schedule), his fingers came into contact with the powder, so they can be identified under black light. There is nothing to be seen on Gabe's hands, but Lucas' hands glow in the light. Sara tries to flee from Lucas, but is almost drowned by him in a practice pool.

In the final fight, both fall into the pool, they point their pistols at each other over the water and wait for the other to appear. Sara manages to overcome her fears of the water (her sister was drowned, from that day on she was no longer in the water) and to stay under water longer than Lucas. Lucas appears and Sara shoots him in the neck. The film ends with Sara and Gabe, who was not seriously injured, being flown off the island in an FBI helicopter.

Trivia

The outdoor recordings took place on the premises and in front of the building of the former Radio Kootwijk transmitter in the Dutch municipality of Barneveld .

Reviews

  • “However, anyone who has seen The Silence of the Lambs or Seven knows that a really brilliant serial killer thriller derives a large part of its fascination from the detailed psychogram of its villain. And that's just missing here. What supposedly could have been the last nail in the coffin for the careers of most of those involved, is nevertheless transformed into at least superbly entertaining cinema fun that skilfully fools the viewer. One cannot really be angry with Mindhunters because he is very clear about his weaknesses and at least tries to hide them very elegantly. And if you get involved in these diversionary maneuvers, you will at least be served an unexpectedly cleverly executed film. ”FM Helme, filmszene.de
  • "The constructed thriller tries unsuccessfully to play with the audience's expectations and neutralizes itself in its effect through the compulsive search for new, surprising twists." Lexicon of international film
