Twelve Rounds (original title 12 Rounds ) is an American action film from 2009 . Directed by Renny Harlin . The protagonist is a professional WWE wrestler , John Cena , with Steve Harris , Ashley Scott , Gonzalo Menendez, Brian J. White and Taylor Cole at his side .

action

Detective Danny Fisher and his colleagues pursue the almost undetectable, internationally wanted terrorist Miles Jackson. After a spectacular chase, Danny succeeds in catching the wanted man. While trying to escape, his girlfriend Erica is killed. Miles himself is arrested and sentenced.

Miles escapes from prison a year later and seeks revenge. He kidnaps Danny's friend Molly and forces the detective to play "12 rounds" of dangerous games that take him across New Orleans. By laps one and two Miles had blown up Danny's house and taken Molly hostage. In round three, Danny is supposed to find a cell phone. He succeeds and he is instructed to go to a locker at a certain time, the location of which he must find out himself. The fifth round leads to a hotel, in which Danny finds photos of Molly and the hint that Miles is still at the hotel. Shortly afterwards he receives the message that he has to decide in round six whether he himself or one of his police colleagues will survive this round. Danny does not manage to save the officers and he tries to stay focused despite the cruel consequences.

In addition to Danny, the FBI is also on Miles' heels. So they comb through the hotel finely, but only find the clue for the seventh round, whereupon Danny finds Molly, who was equipped with an explosive device by Miles. Despite the support of the FBI and a command of snipers, Miles and Molly manage to escape again. For the next round, Miles has distributed several explosive devices around town that Danny should find before they explode.

In the meantime, Danny's partner Hank can track down one of Miles' cellmates who has since been released. When he wants to visit him, Miles kills him.

Danny has seventeen minutes for the final round, because that would be the time when Miles girlfriend died. However, since the detective couldn't have won every round, he realizes that Miles has a very different plan than just revenge. Through his diversionary maneuver, all activities are directed towards finding the hostage. He planned a money robbery and even hijacked a rescue helicopter. Danny takes himself on board with a daring jump, overwhelms Miles and jumps out of the helicopter with Molly, which then explodes with Miles and his prey.

criticism

"An experienced category B action spectacle that hardly knows how to arouse interest in its characters and gets caught up in tiring chases."

- Gregor Ries : cinefacts.de

“Conclusion:“ Twelve rounds ”is sometimes exciting and comes up with tightly staged action, but the breathless plot is poison for an inexperienced actor like wrestling star John Cena. To be worshiped like his idols Bruce Willis or Arnold Schwarzenegger, he is a few decades too late. His obvious goal of becoming the next Hulk Hogan through a sports, music and acting career, Cena should better give up early. Because making a wrestler the main character of a film is only worthy of an Oscar if he is played by Mickey Rourke. "

- Daniela Leistikow : Filmstarts.de

"A sloppily staged action film whose main actor, a wrestling star, can never cover up the weaknesses of the script, camera and noisy soundtrack."
