action
Jimmy Bly is the talented young driver of the racing team of Carl Henry, a paraplegic and success-obsessed racing team owner. After Jimmy has won a few races and is becoming a serious competitor for the established German successful driver Beau Brandenburg, he comes more and more into the spotlight. Forced by his brother, who is also his manager, to more and more press appointments, the pressure on Jimmy increases more and more, and his performances decrease, which is why Henry decides to reactivate the retired ex-champion Joe Tanto, who support Jimmy and to keep his back free. Tanto manages to get through to Jimmy, who has meanwhile fallen in love with Brandenburg's ex-girlfriend. Jimmy's performance will improve again until the showdown at the Lausitzring race. Jimmy's teammate, Memo Moreno, who is now sitting in the cockpit instead of Tanto, has a serious accident. Bly and Brandenburg stop the race to help him and save his life. During the rescue operation, however, Jimmy is injured and can only compete in pain in the last race. Despite his pain, he was able to win the championship in the last race.
background
The film was shot from July 6th to October 12th, 2000. The budget was around 72 million US dollars. The film premiere took place on April 16, 2001 in the USA.
The film takes place on some of the original (partly closed) tracks of the Champ Car series in Chicago , Motegi , Detroit and the Eurospeedway in Lausitz . Also, some scenes from the Detroit race were taken from the Long Beach and Montreal tracks . The race at the Lausitzring was largely filmed on the Contidrom near Hanover . In the racing scenes Juan Pablo Montoya , Mark Blundell (Bly) and Maurício Gugelmin (Tanto) can be seen - but only under their helmets.
You can also see during the film that it was originally intended as a Formula 1 film when Bly goes through the racing calendar and the Nürburgring appears , among other things . In addition, the names Fittipaldi and Andretti are repeatedly mentioned by commentators in the background during the races .
The film was a commercial failure. The revenue of $ 32 million was offset by a budget of $ 72 million. In addition to the film, a video game of the same name was also released , which was also unsuccessful.
Reviews
The lexicon of international films described Driven as "so clumsy in terms of staging and thematically so clichéd and overloaded that even the few good shots of the racing events" went under.
Cinema praised the "spectacular crashes that action professional Renny Harlin ( Cliffhanger ) routinely staged".
Richard Roeper and Jay Leno described the film in Roeper's TV show Ebert & Roeper as "the worst car film of all time", and the "horrific depiction of car races" was also criticized.
Awards
The German Film and Media Evaluation FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title valuable.
In 2002, Estella Warren received a Golden Raspberry for Worst Supporting Actress and was nominated in six other categories.
