The Legend of Hercules ( English for The Legend of Hercules is) an American action film by Renny Harlin from the year 2014 to Kellan Lutz in the lead role . It refers to the adventures of the character from Greek mythology. The world premiere took place on January 6, 2014 in New York City . It was shown regularly in US cinemas on January 10, 2014, and in German-speaking countries on May 1, 2014.

1200 BC: Hercules grows up in ancient Greece as the son of Zeus and Queen Alcmene . However, he knows nothing of his true origins and his fate to end the tyrannical rule of King Amphitryon . Hercules prefers to spend time with his great love Hebe , which, however, was promised to his brother Iphicles .
When he is betrayed by his stepfather, King Amphitryon, and exiled as a slave in Egypt , he discovers his abilities. He not only uses this in the gladiator fights, but also does everything in his power to get his rightful kingdom back.

Millennium Films has been working on a film project about Hercules since 2007. However, production was only approved in February 2013. Renny Harlin was hired to direct it that same month . The project was announced under the title Hercules 3D . In April 2013, the title role was given to Kellan Lutz . A short time later, Liam McIntyre and Gaia Weiss were cast for other central leading roles.
A budget of 70 million US dollars was available for the realization of the film. The working title Hercules 3D was later renamed Hercules: The Legend Begins before getting its final title, The Legend of Hercules . The shooting took place from May 10th to July 15th, 2013 in Sofia , Bulgaria .
The film appeared a few months before Hercules with Dwayne Johnson in the title role. Thus in 2014 two film adaptations about the Greek demigod appeared.

Renny Harlin made a cameo in the film. He plays a captain who reports to King Amphitryon towards the end of the film that Hercules is back in the country.

Reviews
The film received mostly negative reviews. Christoph Petersen from Filmstarts.de judged the film that it was "quite unsuccessful", "despite well-choreographed fights and sets that definitely make an impression".
Gross profit
On its opening weekend, the film raised 8.1 million, taking third place behind Lone Survivor and Frozen . The film fell short of expectations and failed to recoup its $ 70 million production cost. As of May 3, 2014, global box office earnings were only about $ 56 million, of which about $ 18.85 million came from the United States alone.
