Prison ( English for prison ) is an English-language pop song that was interpreted by Natalia Gordienko . It was written by Sharon Vaughn and composed by Filipp Kirkorow and Dimitris Kontopoulos. The title would have been the Moldovan entry at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam .

Background and production

Sharon Vaughn wrote the text. Dimitris Kontopoulos produced and arranged the title. Kirkorow, who previously took part in the competition as an interpreter and composer, composed it together with Kontopoulos. The mix of the song was performed by Andrei Konoplew. Alex Davia was responsible for the mastering and the recordings were made under Aris Binis.

According to Gordienko, the work on the title was done on a friendly basis and got by without any financial consideration.

Gordienko won the Finala Naţională Eurovision 2020 show on February 29, 2020 with the highest number of points ahead of second-placed Pasha Parfeny . She won the telephone vote by a clear margin. Gordienko was accompanied on stage by singers from Sweden. The choreography was developed by Fokas Evangelinos.

Music and lyrics

According to the production team, the content of the song is about the strong emotions in a relationship. The eponymous term Prison ( German prison ) is used as a metaphor for how the emotions "capture" the person. The song is made up of two stanzas, each separated by a pre-chorus and a chorus. The second pre-chorus is shorter than the first. Before the final repetition of the chorus, the bridge is sung.

Prison is unusual for pop songs 12 / 8 listed -Stroke. The song is still characterized by the mixing of traditional instruments as well as the electro beat and synthesizers .

At the Eurovision Song Contest

Moldova should have performed with this song in the second semifinals of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. However, due to the advancing COVID-19 pandemic , the competition was canceled.

reception

Wiwibloggs called Prison one of the most unusual ballads of the year. The last part, in which the bridge merges into the chorus, was also praised. On the other hand, the interpreter's English pronunciation was criticized. The German blog ESC Kompakt came to a similar view. There the title was received very badly overall. Among other things, it was described as the "worst work of the current ESC year". The song tries to appear more interesting through the dark instrumentation, which, however, has "felt already heard umpteen times". According to Eurovisionary, Prison would have worked better in the early 2000s.

publication

The song was released in late January 2020 along with a music video.
