Tidal (also known as TIDALHiFi ) is a music streaming - service , among other things, using a lossless data compression promotes itself. Tidal was founded in 2014 by the Norwegian-Swedish technology company Aspiro AB . After Aspiro was taken over by the rapper Jay-Z in March 2015 , Tidal started a large-scale advertising campaign on social media with the hashtag “#TIDALforAll”. At a press conference on March 16, 2015 it was announced that in addition to Jay-Z 16 other artists were among the shareholders, including Beyoncé , Prince , Rihanna , Kanye West , Daft Punk , Jack White , Madonna , Alicia Keys , Usher , deadmau5 , Nicki Minaj and J. Cole .

When the service opened, there were over 25 million songs and 85,000 music videos available, currently (March 2019) there are more than 60 million songs and 240,000 music videos. In addition, Tidal allows the import of playlists from other streaming providers. Tidal is currently (March 2019) available in 53 different countries, including Germany , Austria , and Switzerland .

When the German edition of Tidal was launched, reviewers praised the significantly better sound quality compared to other streaming services such as Apple Music or Spotify . In the USA, however, it was also criticized that the majority of potential listeners were not in a position to use the acoustic advantages of the new service.
