deadmau5 (2014)

deadmau5 (born January 5, 1981 in Niagara Falls , Ontario ; real name Joel Thomas Zimmerman ) is a Canadian music producer who is mainly active in the styles of progressive house and electro house as well as deep house . He has his own label called mau5trap.

The trademark and logo of deadmau5 is the Mau5head, which he wears as a mask at concerts.

life and career

Zimmerman first worked in a computer shop in his youth and was already making electronic music with trackers in his spare time. From 1998 he worked as a co-producer at a radio station and at the age of 22 took a job as a software developer in Toronto . He started producing music in 2005 under the name deadmau5. In 2006 he released his most successful singles to date, Not Exactly and Faxing Berlin , which only entered the DJ charts a year later. Thus came Not Exactly in the charts of the year the German dance charts in 2007 at No. 37. He was with the tattoo -Künstlerin Kat Von D dating. On August 12, 2017, he married his long-term friend Kelly Fedoni.

Awards

In 2008 Zimmerman and Billy Newton-Davis won the Canadian Juno Award for the best dance track of the year entitled All U Ever Want . At the Beatport Music Awards , which were held for the first time in the same year and whose winners are chosen by the users of the well-known online music shop for electronic dance music Beatport , he was successful several times: he was named both best electro house and best progressive house -Artist awarded, his single Not Exactly won the title "Best Single 2008". He was also voted the “most influential person” and the “best producer” of the electronic dance music scene at this event. In 2008 he was known by the readers of DJ Magazine DJ Magazine voted # 11 of the most popular DJs, making it the best rookie. In 2009 the readers of DJ Magazine voted him 6th place, in 2010 even 4th place. In 2010 he won the award for Best American DJ at the Winter Music Conference . deadmau5 (2008)

stage name

Deadmau5 traces the idea for his stage name back to an event in which he found a dead mouse in his computer.

“I once smelled a bad smell in my room, and when looking into my PC I found a dead mouse skeleton in it. From that moment on, my friends called me "dead mouse". But in IRC your nickname can only be eight digits long, so I called myself "deadmau5", while the 5 means a S. And I just kept it. ”

The "mau5" in his artist name means "mouse", the S is written as 5 (as usual in Leetspeak ), but pronounced like the letter. He uses a stylized mouse head as a logo.

Computer games

In the expansion "Reaper of Souls" for the computer game Diablo 3 there is an amulet called "Halcyons Aufstieg", which is similar to the deadmau5 mask. It also lets enemies bounce around for a few seconds when you activate a special skill. There is also a quote about this amulet: "Raise your weapon, raise your weapon ... and it's over", which is based on his song "Raise Your Weapon".

He also appeared in the computer game Watch Dogs (2014) as an alter ego (“Defalt” with a rat head) as a DJ and hacker of the opposing party.

He also gets an appearance in the computer game Goat Simulator . On the roof of a skyscraper, Deadmau5 can be seen as a DJ with his mask in front of the mixer, a crowd of people dancing in front of him.

In a game from the GTA computer game series (Grand Theft Auto Chinatown Wars, Nintendo DS / PSP / iOS) there is a radio station that bears his name and plays a mix of him in an endless loop.

In the game Rocket League there is the "Mau5head" as a roof attachment and as an antenna.

In addition, he is the only person in the game Minecraft to have additional ears on his skin, which extend his head to the familiar mask.

The game Dota 2 has been offering an entire musical redesign with the "deadmau5 dieback music pack" since July 23, 2015.

In the 2013 film Runner Runner by Brad Furman, deadmau5 appeared at the mixer with his mask in a scene, while the actor Justin Timberlake as Richie Furst went to an event in Costa Rica in search of the protagonist Ivan Block, owner of an online Poker website, played by Ben Affleck, makes.
