Robert Swire Thompson ( Rob Swire for short ; born November 5, 1982 in Western Australia ) is an Australian singer-songwriter and music producer in the genres of drum and bass , house and dubstep . He gained fame above all as the band leader of Pendulum and Knife Party . Swire is proficient in a number of instruments, including various percussion instruments , piano and guitar synthesizers, and electric bass .

Career

Swire was born in Australia but spent five years of his childhood in the Zimbabwean capital Harare , where he learned to play the drums . Back in his home country he visited in Swanbourne , a suburb of Perth , the Scotch College . There he first met the later band member Gareth McGrillen . After leaving college in 1999, he began working as a music producer for local bands, specializing in the genres of drum and bass , breakbeat and metal . He also published his first own songs under independent labels , such as Fat American Bitchcore or Electrodes on the Skull , mostly in connection with works by other musicians.

In 2002 he teamed up with Gareth McGrillen, with whom he had previously formed the Xygen project , and the DJ Paul Harding to form the drum and bass band Pendulum . Swire acted as the band's songwriter and producer and took on vocals and guitar synthesizer during performances, which made him stand out as a band leader . The band made a name for themselves with their debut album Hold Your Color and released five albums before they broke up . In 2011, Swire formed a new Knife Party with McGrillen , before announcing the dissolution of Pendulum in June 2012. To found Knife Party, he published the track Not Pendulum to make it clear that Knife Party does not depend on Pendulum.

With Knife Party , Swire and McGrillen primarily serve the house and dubstep genre. So far the duo has released four EPs and one album. In addition, Swire is still active as a producer, for example for Rihanna , for whose single Rude Boy he contributed electric bass and backing vocals.

In March 2016 Pendulum appeared at the Ultra Music Festival in Miami for the first time since the long break under the title "Pendulum Returns". In 2017 the band did a worldwide tour.
