Rude Boy is a song by the Barbadian R&B singer Rihanna . It belongs to the genres Contemporary R&B , Pop and Dancehall . It was the third single from her fourth album Rated R released.

Rude Boy was well received by critics and was a commercial success worldwide. It reached number one in the charts in the USA and Australia , and the top five in almost every country worldwide. In the US, Rude Boy is Rihanna's most successful and best-selling single from Rated R and topped the American Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks . The music video is based on the Jamaican dancehall theme, with influences from Keith Haring .

Commercial win

On February 17, 2010, Rude Boy debuted at number 64 on the American Billboard Hot 100 . The following week, the song peaked at number 23 and became Rihanna's nineteenth top 40 hit in the US. In the third week the song reached number eight and became Rihanna's fourteenth top ten hit, which made her the artist with the most top ten hits in the US since 2000, and it is her third top ten hit from the album Rated R . On March 18, 2010, the song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the top rated R single and Rihanna's sixth number one hit in the United States. This makes her with Paula Abdul and Diana Ross the artist with the third most number one hits in the history of the Hot 100 .

Rude Boy spent five weeks at number one on the Hot 100 and is Rihanna's second-longest and most successful number one hit in the US, behind Umbrella .

Rude Boy reached number two on the UK single charts on March 7, 2010 , making the song her twelfth top ten hit there. The single went platinum on July 22, 2013 for more than 600,000 copies sold . In Canada , the song reached number seven on the charts. In Ireland, Rude Boy reached number three and is already Rihanna's fifteenth top ten hit there. In Australia , Rude Boy became Rihanna's fourth number one hit on March 7, 2010, and went double-platinum by the end of the year for over 140,000 units sold. On 10 October 2010, the song was in New Zealand with platinum award for over 15,000 copies sold. In Belgium could Song third place in the Ultratop - Charts climb and was for sales of more than 15,000 units with the gold record awarded.

In total, the single sold around 4,600,000 times worldwide.

The director of music video led Melina Matsoukas ; it was shot in front of a green screen in Hollywood , Los Angeles in January 2010 . Matsoukas already directed Rihanna's song Hard . The video premiered on February 10, 2010 on VEVO . According to their own statements, the video for Rude Boy is Rihanna's favorite music video.

Rihanna shows many 1990s dancehall dances during the video . In some scenes, Rihanna dances with a dancer. The video shows Rihanna in many different outfits , e.g. B. as a zebra .

The music video bears many similarities to MIA's video about Boyz . Director Melina Matsoukas said: “Both videos are great; one video is the inspiration for the other. "

Live performances

Rihanna sang Rude Boy on The Ellen DeGeneres Show , which aired on February 15, 2010. In the UK , Rihanna sang the song on the Alan Carr: Chatty Man Show on February 25, 2010 and on GMTV the following day. On March 3rd, 2010 Rihanna presented Rude Boy with two robots at the ECHO Awards in Berlin . Rude Boy was also on the setlist of Rihanna's " Last Girl on Earth Tour ".
